Diane Susan Smith

Diane Susan Smith passed away October 2, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 29, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Julius and Irene McDonald. As the fourth of eight siblings, Diane's compassion and love shone brightly from an early age. She was a fierce protector of her siblings and a reliable help to her parents in their later years. Her creativity was apparent early on; she loved to dance and was known for her sense of style and fashion. She designed and sewed beautiful clothing, a talent for which she was admired her entire life. A romantic at heart, Diane married her high school sweetheart, Rex Smith, on October 9, 1970. They were happily married for 45 years, a testament to her enduring love and commitment. Diane treasured any chance to share her love story, joyfully describing her first date with Rex on Christmas night, 1968. Together, they had many adventures, including building a construction business. Diane faithfully helped Rex, once even finishing concrete with him while she was in labor. They built a beautiful life and family together, and their legacy will live on in their beloved family. Diane’s greatest passion was her family, and she was a devoted mother to her seven children. She made costumes, helped with school projects, attended performances, and was an enthusiastic cheerleader and advocate for each of her children. She was known for her thoughtful gestures, always celebrating birthdays and holidays with heartfelt cards, texts, and little gifts that brought joy to those around her. Her beautiful singing voice always stood out in lovely harmony when singing with her family. Diane loved hosting and attending parties. Her infectious spirit lit up every occasion she attended, and she often arrived with decorations and treats. She had a wonderful sense of humor and many of her hilarious quotes are still in use at family gatherings. Diane was also a talented cook and frequently delighted family and friends with her homemade treats, especially her famous holiday sugar cookies, cabbage rolls, Thanksgiving dinner rolls,and pumpkin pie. Diane was a devout Christian and loved serving the Lord with her church family. Her faith in God and belief in Jesus provided strength and guidance throughout her life. Diane is survived by her seven children: Jeremiah (Eugenia) Smith, Sybrena Smith, Joshua (Mindy) Smith, Rebecca (Greg) Miner, Jedediah (Sarah) Smith, Zechariah (Lindsey) Smith, and Micah (Samantha) Smith; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and adventure will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. Diane was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Smith, her parents, and four of her siblings. A celebration of Diane’s life will be held on October 11, 2024, at 12 PM at Gospel Grace Church (662 E. 1300 S., Salt Lake City, UT 84105). Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery.
