I stayed with Ed and Becky over a summer in the early 80s. I have many great memories of that time, but I'll share one that to me shows the love and humor Ed possessed.
When he was leaving, (or arriving), he would always kiss Becky, ...always.
What I recall was the grand production he would put forth before he would kiss her, even if just a peck. In my mind, this happened every time. These were shows of how important this moment was to him. He would practice his pucker, spend sometimes 20 seconds being sure his lips were sufficiently moistened, check his breath, and do warm ups to prepare, stretching as if in the Olympic finals.
He made it out like this was the most important part of, and the highlight of, his day.
It may have been to entertain Becky, it may have been in part to entertain his impressionable children, (Mike, Chris, and Katie), and it may have been in part to entertain an impressionable teenager staying in their home. I suspect, however, the main reason he went through those daily displays of showmanship was to fuel his sense of humor and because that moment, was in fact, the most important part of, and certainly one of the highlights of his day.
I was blessed to have witnessed this show of wit and wisdom and what I will call class.
Ed will be surely missed.
I am so sorry for your loss. May his memory be for a blessing. I am keeping you and your family in my thoughts during this time. -Jase
