in honor of Ruth.

My Dad Lyle, was Ruth's oldest brother. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was when our family would take our yearly vacation and drive from Los Angeles to Idaho Falls
and visit the Christensen family when they were all young and still at home. Ruth worked in an ice cream store and would spoil me with chocolate scoop cones. In their beautiful home with the big picture window in the living room, I was fascinated by Grandma Cora's organ with all those stops and pedals. I was so appreciative that Ruth could come to my
Mom's funeral (Nettie) in 2114. Another fond memory was seeing her husband Blaine sing
with the MOTAB Choir at Carnegie Hall in 1976 (I might be off a year or so). He came out to the lobby afterwards and My wife Jill and I visited with him- what a great memory! We'll miss them both...

Such an easy-going lady! I loved how she just didn't ever act stressed. She just giggled and loved people. She took life in stride. I went to school with Carol and David. I remember going with Carol to visit Jean when she was preparing to go to BYU in Provo. The family loved that college! Educational excellence was important to her and the whole family.

I just picture her giggling and enjoying her new location!

Mrs. Wasden made my 3rd grade year one of my favorites at Woodrow Wilson. She made learning fun and interesting, and had the best art projects. I especially loved how she taught Utah History and her read alouds of various books and poems with "Charlotte's Web" being one of my favorite. We were also excited when we met Mr. Wasden on a walking field trip to Madison so we could see a brand new technology called video tapes! She was the epitome of a famous quote often used in education: "No one will care how much you know, unless they know how much you care." She cared.

She also had a positive impact on my mom when they served together in the stake primary. Mom loved working with her and always spoke highly of her.

I am thankful for Mrs. Ruth Wasden- my 4th grade teacher. I had two sisters who had Mrs. Wasden as a teacher before me, and I always heard them speak highly of her; she also gave out Froot Loops and little robin eggs. Mrs. Wasden was a teacher who made me want to learn, and she encouraged me constantly. She called us her chickadees. She read "Little House in the big Woods", "These Happy Golden Years", and "A Wrinkle in Time" to our class and she got me hooked on reading. She made our class learn the poem "The Garden Year" by Sara Coleridge, and I remember it to this day. She was the first person I remember who went to Japan, and she'd talk about it during lessons. She helped to teach me to play the recorder, and when President Reagan was shot, she let us watch news coverage, because it was history, and she felt we were mature enough to watch. I remember a copy machine picture of her son David -who I believe was serving a mission in Argentina- hanging on her closet door in her classroom. I remember her daughter Carol coming and teaching us a song at Halloween- “Have you seen the ghost of John?”. I would visit her often after leaving 4th grade. When I was a missionary in Japan, by coincidence, I met a guy who was an exchange student at her house. Being thousands of miles away from home, her influence was still close by. I ran into her once in the Salt Lake Temple and had a great little talk with her. I'm so thankful for Mrs. Wasden, and all she did for me in my life. She was my favorite teacher.
