Mary Squires

Our beloved mother and grandmother Mary Squires passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter Linda, April 18, 2024. Mary was born August 6, 1931, in Dayton Idaho to Lyman and Lula Rosetta Schenk Balls. She enjoyed growing up on a farm that her father, mother, three sisters, and three brothers built from a wasteland of dirt into a beautiful farm. She graduated from Westside high school and Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in English, Philosophy, and Communications. She always encouraged her children to get an education. She was a beautiful seamstress and worked in fabrics; sewed clothes for herself and her family and was a manager in a fabric shop. Mary married Walter Harris Squires on June 11, 1951, in the Logan temple. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held several callings. She loved to read and learn about everything and go to school attending many classes until she was 80 years old. She was a gifted writer and loved and wrote poetry. She loved words and had a beautiful way with words and her children and grandchildren were all blessed by this talent. She was blessed with a body that loved to move, almost every morning she exercised by running, then, when older walking in nature. She enjoyed snow skiing, golfing, waterskiing, bowling, hiking, camping with family and friends; and with her husband enjoyed camping and hiking, visiting all of Utah and most western states and parks. Walter, when he was eighty-three, drove Mary on her 80th birthday up the west coast to see the awesome redwood trees. She had a passion for traveling and visited many countries abroad and every state in the USA on Amtrak with her friend Joy. Mary is survived by her children Sherri (Doug) Kennedy, Jeffrey (Linda) Squires, Linda (Dave) Steed, Matthew (Connie) Squires, 11 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. Family was always important to her, she loved them all and was always so happy to see their smiling faces. She is also survived by her siblings Mack Ball, and Elda Winward. She was the most genuine, kind, loving, beautiful, humble wife, mother, and grandmother and was loved by all who had the privilege to know her.
