William Henderson Hyde

William Henderson Hyde, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Born on March 1, 1934, to Rosel Herschel and Mary Henderson Hyde, Bill was the third of four children and grew up in a home filled with faith, music, and a deep sense of service. A gifted pianist from a young age, Bill’s lifelong love of music began when he started lessons at age seven—a pursuit his mother insisted he continue through high school and beyond. Music remained a meaningful part of his life, enriching both his home and his worship. Bill faithfully served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil, where he developed a lasting love for the Portuguese language and the people he served. His testimony of the gospel was firm, and he nurtured it throughout his life by alternating yearly readings of the Book of Mormon in English and Portuguese. He earned a degree in Industrial Management from Brigham Young University and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force through the ROTC program. His 20-year military career as a pilot included distinguished service during the Vietnam War, for which he was awarded 11 Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. While home for Christmas, Bill met the love of his life, Janet Dayley. They were married in the Logan Utah Temple on August 9, 1961, beginning a beautiful 64-year journey together. Their life took them across the globe, raising four children: Bill (Texas), Jerry (Okinawa), Scott (Delaware), and Kristina (Turkey), as they embraced the adventure of military service and family life. Bill was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lived a life of service and discipleship. He held many callings throughout his life, including Branch President, Bishopric Counselor, High Counselor, Primary Pianist, and even the Relief Society President while serving as a Missionary in Brazil. The calling he cherished most was teaching the Priesthood in the Dover Ward, which he did faithfully for decades. Well-studied and articulate, Bill’s lessons were known for being both entertaining and deeply insightful—he taught not only by word but by example. A lifelong advocate for fitness and wellness, Bill enjoyed racquetball, cycling, and working out on his Total Gym well into his later years. Yet, more than anything, he found joy in his family and in their efforts to follow Christ. Being with them, especially in the temple, was his greatest source of happiness. He is survived by his devoted wife Janet, their four children, and their spouses: Bill and Tammy, Jerry and Karen, Scott and Melanie, and Kristina and Frank. He leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and countless others who were touched by his faith, humor, kindness, and unwavering example. Bill’s life was a testament to service, faith, family, and love. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
