William Richard Treu

William Richard Treu passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 12, 2025. Bill was born May 15, 1933 at home to Karl Treu and Erma Mae Jackson in Los Angeles, California. He was the third child and only son of Karl and Erma. His older sisters were Barbara and Shirley. He grew up in the Los Angeles area where he attended Wilton Elementary, John Burroughs Jr. High, and Los Angeles High School. At a young age Bill had an affinity for basketball which carried throughout his life. At Los Angeles High School he was a three time All City Basketball Star and after graduation was selected to play on "The California All-Stars". The All-Stars was a team compiled of the top ten basketball players in California.. That team toured through California, Oregon, Washington, and Canada. During that tour he had the pleasure of rooming with Bill Russell who would later play in the NBA. After touring with the All-Stars, Bill was called to serve a mission in the Spanish American Mission in Houston, Texas. Because of the Korean War, he was the only missionary allowed to be called from his Stake. At that time it was the only foreign speaking mission in the United States. He served a two- and 1/2-year mission from September 1953 to March 1956. After his mission he played basketball at BYU. His nickname at BYU was "Battling Bill Treu". Bill met Vicki Fliedner at a friend's wedding reception in Bel Aire, California in August 1959, and on March 18, 1960, they were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. They raised eight children, Cindy, Kathie, Jeff, Julianne, Eric, Debbie, Brian and Michael. Bill worked at Jackson Brothers Construction company in Los Angeles, a family business, for 40 years. Among many other projects, Bill was privileged to be the project manager of The Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Ventura twenty story office building, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. In 1968 he was asked to move to Hawaii and help with the construction of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Travel Lodge and several other small projects. He also constructed his own home in Kailua for the family. In 1971 the family moved back to Northridge, California. From 1972 to 1992, the family lived in Northridge, where Bill continued to work in the construction field. During this time, he served as a Bishop, and a Branch President over a new Spanish branch. In 1992, Bill and Vicki moved to Salt Lake City with the youngest 2 boys, as the older children were already residing here. He accepted a position with Layton Construction in 1993, where he was the project manager of the Continuous Steel Castor in Lehi, Utah. He also oversaw the new construction of BYU campus dorms, while working on other projects In January 1996, Bill received a call from the Temple Department to be a project manager to oversee the building of church temples. In May of 1996, they left their home in Holladay, Utah and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to build the Boston Massachusetts Temple. He was also asked to be the Project Manager of some smaller temples, including Halifax Nova Scotia, Montreal Canada, and Palmyra New York. They then moved to Monterrey, Mexico, and oversaw the building of that temple. In August 2003, Bill received a call from President Hinckley to serve as the President of the Veracruz Mexico Temple. They served from November 2003 to November 2006. He also served as a sealer in the Jordan River and Oquirrh Mountain Temples. In May of 2008, Bill retired, and they moved into the Daybreak community. Bill is survived by his wife, Vicki and his eight children: Cindy, Kathie, Jeff (Jody), Julianne, Eric, Deborah, Brian (Christina), and Michael. 14 grandchildren and 15 1/2 great grandchildren.
