Anna Elizabeth "Betty" Monson

January 29, 1927 - August 25, 2013

Anna Elizabeth (Betty) Monson passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 25 at her home, surrounded by family. Betty was born on January 29, 1927, in Norfolk, Virginia to Alexander Bunn and Pansy McGee Strickland. She grew up in a loving family, and was the youngest of five children. Her father was instrumental in establishing the first branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Norfolk area, and served as the first branch president in Norfolk for over 20 years. One room in their home was always reserved for missionaries, and was known as the missionary bedroom. Betty's devotion to the church and love of family were shaped early by the righteous example of her parents. Betty attended BYU and was married in the Salt Lake Temple to Darrel James Monson in October 1946. They had seven children. Darrel taught electrical engineering at BYU and also served as Assistance Academic Vice President at the university. He passed away in 1975. Betty was a faithful member of the LDS church. She served in several callings throughout her life, including many years in the primary and young women organizations. She loved music, and until recently served as the chorister in her ward for over 20 years. She took this calling seriously, and often commented on the inspiration and revelation she received from church hymns to help guide her life. Most of all, her life was guided by her love of family and of the Lord - never seeking personal praise but only the happiness of those around her. She is survived by all seven of her children: Darrel Glade Monson, Glenn Allen Monson, Dale Eugene Monson, Elaine Page, Kent Ronald Monson, Raelene Burnett, and Lynn Terry Monson. She has 27 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren - with more on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and all of her siblings. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 30, at 11:00 a.m. at the Orem 3rd ward chapel at 50 S. 800 E. in Orem. Family and friends are invited to meet from 9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 29, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the same location. Interment will be held at the Orem City Cemetery following the funeral service.
