Anne Harmon Datko

October 7, 1934 - October 19, 2021

Anne Harmon Datko died peacefully on October 19, 2021 in Ogden, UT. Anne was born on October 7, 1934, the daughter James Arthur Harmon and Dorothy Agnes Black Harmon, in Spartanburg, SC. Her brother James Clyde Harmon died in 2001. She attended Spartanburg City Schools and District Five High School in Duncan, SC. She received a BA from Winthrop College (now University), an MA from Duke University, and a PhD from McGill University. She worked at RIAS (Research Institute for Advanced Study) in Baltimore, MD, and at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She met her to-be husband, Richard Datko, at RIAS in 1963 and married and moved with him to Montreal, Canada. In 1969 they returned to the United States where she was employed at the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, MD., until 1990. She retired from CREES, US Department of Agriculture, in 1999. She moved to Ogden, UT in 2013. Her passion was making art quilts. Her work was published as well as exhibited nationally and internationally. In Utah she was instrumental in establishing a small group of fiber artists who explore the many different aspects of that medium. She is survived by Catherine Anne Datko (Doug Cummings, Azusa, CA) and James Datko (Christina, Ogden, UT). Her grandchildren Naomi and Lilly (Ogden) and Alexandra (Azusa) and sister-in-law Myrtle Harmon (Poplar Springs SC) also survive. Visitation will be Friday, October 29 from 6-8 PM at Premier Funeral Services, 5335 S 1950 W, Roy, UT 84067. Celebration and Art Viewing will be Saturday, October 30 from 4-6 PM at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden, UT 84401. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Anne’s honor be made to Studio Art Quilt Associates (https://www.saqa.com/) or the Eccles Art Center (https://ogden4arts.org/).
