Cherie Burton

August 19, 1946 - February 3, 2021

Cherie “Cher-ie, Charlene, Sheree, MRS. Burton, and Cher-bear” Burton was born on August 19th, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Russell and Helen Olofson. She was reunited with them, one sister, and grandson Ben on February 3rd, 2021 surrounded by her family after a courageous and exemplary battle with cancer. Cherie was a soul full of love and kindness with a little stubbornness, ok maybe more than a little, but she always thought about others needs first. It was an example we can all live by to be truly happy. Cherie was raised in Salt Lake City, Huntsville, Bountiful, and Ogden where she attended schools and graduated from Weber High School in 1964. It wasn’t long after graduating that she met her forever love, David E. Burton, who had returned home from a LDS mission in London England, that they were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1965. Dad says he remembers seeing mom when they were just very young toddlers in Huntsville, and yet it took him not being able to find a date years later, that he was set up with Cherie by a friend to go out together, that blossomed into what will be an eternity of working, loving, fighting, and growing together while raising their children. Cherie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served in several capacities over the years in primary, relief society, and others. She loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and it teachings, the very plan that families can be together forever brought her great joy and comfort. She followed the Saviors counsel and example to love, even through all the difficulties that can exist here on the earth. Mom worked hard as a stay at home mom, tended many others children to earn a little extra money, and also retired eventually from the IRS after working late nights and early mornings. Along with Dad, they raised 6 children in Ogden, at first, and then settled in Plain city for the last 40+ years where they made so many good friends. She loved to give and do for others, it was innate to her persona. She loved to cook and over the years clipped thousands of recipes out of magazines and other publications as well as purchased many cook books. Her favorite time of the year, and one that is talked about with close and extended family, was Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey, the mashed potatoes, stuffing, and the gravy, oh the gravy, that remains a little bit of a mystery on how it was so good, was a treat to all of us, but for her it was the joy of having family around and being able to serve. She wouldn’t eat until long into the day and after everyone else was well into their first, or getting, their second helpings. Cherie loved to crochet and it brought her comfort and another way to ‘do’ for others. Always giving away Afghans, doylies, and many other handmade items as gifts from the heart, including making beautiful blessing dresses for each of her granddaughters and great granddaughters. Although never blessed with the highest of riches of the world, she shared and gave with all the purity of heart which made her feel rich. I remember when we were younger, her literally taking the last coins from her purse to try and get us a new shirt, or something we thought we needed. Mom was a person who never wanted the spotlight on her and to the very end asked for simplicity in celebration of her life. Through life she was always ‘fine’ and even up to the most difficult end, when the mortal body was in the greatest of pain, she would tell us ‘I’m fine’. We knew she wasn’t fine the last 4 years especially but she remained as an example of strength and stubbornness, love and kindness, long suffering and silliness, and kept us smiling, and grimacing at times. We know that now, although separated for a time from us, her family and friends, she really is ‘fine’. Free from mortal challenges and pains. We are confident that she is now feeling a happiness that is immense along with a sadness for leaving us behind. I am sure her laugh has got everyone in tears since, when she laughed and really got going, it was hard to breathe because of the depth of the laughter. This will be something we miss here, for now. As well as each time a grandchild entered the room she would say “Hello Sweetie”. Cherie was the queen of ‘saving it for a special occasion’ which speaks to her cherishing the small things and making sure the spotlight moved quickly from her to someone or something else. Sadly, there are still some things in her home that remain, for a special occasion, but that is probably the way she would have liked it. She loved camping over the years with her family and that tradition grew and grew to having many of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all being in camps at the same time together, it just brought her the most meaningful joy to all be in one place, despite the moods and attitudes each day, the ultimate prize was just being there, together. Something I can safely say is shared by all of her children and being passed to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cherie was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Tammy Olofson and one grandson Benjamin Burton. She is survived by her husband, David (Plain City, UT), two sisters, Shawnie (Bob) Stoker (UT), Heidi (Steve) Phipps (AZ). Six children, Melonie (Jack) Terry, Shamayne (Mark) Russell, Sean (Tiffiny) Burton, Jory (Brandy) Burton, Bryce (Jamece) Burton, Jayne (Dustin) Stanger, all in Utah. As well as 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren as well as many wonderful nephews and nieces. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our sweet mother and grandmother, Cherie Olofson Burton, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2021 after a valiant 4 year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family members. Cherie was born August 19, 1946 to Russell and Helen Olofson in Salt Lake City. She has 3 wonderful sisters, Shawnie (Bob) Stoker, Heidi (Steve) Phipps and Tammy Olofson (deceased). She grew up with her sisters in Salt Lake, Bountiful, and Huntsville and graduated from Weber High School in 1964. Huntsville is where she would meet her eternal companion. Cherie was sealed to David Earl Burton in the Salt Lake Temple on Dec. 10, 1965. They began their family in Ogden, eventually moving to Plain City where they raised their 6 children. Melonie (Jack) Terry, Shamayne (Mark) Russell, Sean (Tiffany), Jory (Brandy), Bryce (Jamece), and Jayne (Dustin) Stanger. They were then blessed with 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and more to come. Cherie was faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She showed her faith in the way she served both in church callings and those around her. She always put others first. Willing to sacrifice anything and sometimes everything for someone else. She was gifted at sewing and crocheting. Making many blankets, dresses and other items, that of course went to someone else. She crocheted beautiful blessing dresses for each of her granddaughters. Which are each unique and are a treasure to each of them. She’s spent many countless late night hours working on them. Cherie enjoyed camping, word searches and sudoku. She loved being surrounded by family. Each grandchild was greeted with “Hello Sweetie”. Thanksgiving was her masterpiece. She loved having family and extended family over to for her Thanksgiving meal. She is renowned for her secret gravy, that to this day, we don’t know how she made it taste so good. She also loved the yearly Easter egg hunt and pumpkin carving in the fall. We will always remember Sunday popsicles or ice cream. Cherie had an infectious laugh. It brought many to tears, including herself. We will definitely miss it and long to hear it once again. She was one that never complained. Always saying there was someone out there that was worse off than her. She showed us resilience and endurance through all the trials of life. Especially, the last 4 years as she battled cancer. With her passing, she is reunited with her parents, sister Tammy, and grandson Ben. She is survived by her husband David, all of her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, her sisters Shawnee and Heidi and their spouses and many nieces and nephews that all love and adore her. She loved many, she was loved my many more. She was truly grateful for all the friendships she made and for the people in her life. Thank you to all who loved and supported her throughout her life. We are truly blessed to have her in our lives. We look forward to the time we will meet again. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses that helped give us 4 more years with her. And, a special thanks to her three amazing daughters, who, over time and especially the last 4 years, spent countless hours caring for, giving rides, and supporting her at each and every appointment. In lieu of flowers please donate your time, talent, or money to someone or cause that is “worse off than you.” You may send condolences, leave messages and stories, and read more about Cherie at www.premierfuneral.com A family graveside service will be held Feb. 8, 2021 at the Ogden City Cemetery.
