Elwood "Woody" Martin

August 25, 1936 - September 2, 2021

Elwood “Woody” Martin age 85, of Salt Lake City, Utah passed away Thursday September 2, 2021 with family by his side. Born in Lewistown, Frederick County, Maryland on August 25, 1936 to Luther H. Martin and Hilda Hoffman Martin. Married Doris E Reynolds in 1954, later divorced. Married Sherry McBride (deceased). Preceded in death by his parents, sister, Dorothy Lantz her husband (Donald Lantz); brother Bernard Martin; infant daughter Jeanette, step son Kirk Bagshaw and 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild. Survived by brothers: Herbert (Phyllis); Kenneth (Phyllis); Odale (Connie deceased); Children: Darrell (Cathy); Susan Hansen (Greg); Marlene Story (Joe); Jim (Kathy); Step daughter Lani McDonald (Mack).23 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild. Woody grew up in a time of eating what you grew in the garden to the animals raised for the table which meant a strong work ethic and tremendous skills to share and be admired. He could build anything, fix anything rising early and working until late. He was as strong as he was determined and he could run numbers in his head accurately and quickly. He was a storyteller so hearing about his childhood growing up in Maryland has endeared us even more to our heritage and family there. He enjoyed staying in touch with the missionaries who graced our home as new members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints back in the mid to late ‘60’s. Dad loved temple work and being with family and friends. It was a gift for him to have family and friends visiting, calling or sending cards his last weeks as his days drew to a close following a year of isolation due to COVID. It was a beautiful evening for him to take his last breaths while rain fell, matching our own tears sliding down our cheeks as we were saying our last good-byes. To see a perfectly full bright rainbow just before his own body drained of its earthly color seemed so fitting where one light dimmed another shown bright, until we meet again. Interment Mount Olivet with a private graveside service to be announced. Thank you to Encompass Hospice for their kindness, care and dedication during a most difficult time.
