Hugh Elwin Girsberger

Hugh Elwin Girsberger was born on February 11, 1939. He was 83 years old at the time of his passing on January 16, 2024. He died peacefully and will be missed by his family and friends. He was the son of Llewellyn and Ruth Girsberger and the brother of Kenneth and Luella. He was the youngest in his family and loved and looked up to his brother and sister. He grew up in the farm country of Washington state and enjoyed a life of helping with farm animals, romping the farmland with his dog, Butch, and driving tractors and wheat combines during harvests. He enjoyed school and all that came with it! He learned to play the trombone, sang in the county chorus, was on the football team, and was the manager for the basketball team as well. He especially looked forward to class reunions and keeping connected with many of his friends throughout the years. Soon after his High School graduation in 1957, he and two of his friends enlisted to serve in the Navy together and departed for their service at the same time. He was on the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier for a few years and was always proud of the service he gave his country. While in the Navy, he received letters from some girls at BYU who wanted to write to young men in the military and one pretty girl, Carol Glee Hatch, stood out to Hugh and their correspondence began. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he took his convertible car for a drive from Washington to Vernal, Utah to surprise Glee while she was working as a waitress in a local restaurant there. Their friendship flourished to his proposing and their marriage in 1961 a little over a year later! Hugh went to a tech school to learn the trade of auto body repair and took that skill to Boeing where he painted airplanes, then to car dealerships, and finally an auto body repair shop in Pendleton, Oregon, where he retired. In 2005 his wife, Glee, passed away and Hugh was blessed to reconnect with a friend, Faye, and later married her in 2006. Hugh and Faye served a Guest Service mission together at the Conference Center at Temple Square and served several years in the Draper and Jordan River temples and he especially loved being an ordinance worker and serving in the baptistry. Having Faye as his wife, and serving together with her, led to a fulfilling life in his later years and she was a blessing in his life to the very end. Hugh enjoyed gardening and his garden always had neat and tidy rows and an abundant crop. He enjoyed serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and one opportunity especially brought him joy. He regularly met with inmates at a prison near his home to visit and to teach them about the gospel of Jesus Christ. With his ready smile and hand of friendship, he helped and encouraged the inmates and had many good memories of his time ministering there. Hugh truly enjoyed times when he could connect and spend time with family and the laughter and goodness that ensued. He loved reading and could be found with a book in his hand most of the time. Westerns, espionage, and historical books were some of his most favorites! Hugh is preceded in death by his son, Phillip, his wife, Glee, and brother, Ken. He will be missed by his family, his friends, and many acquaintances, but leaves us all a legacy of hard work, love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and a wonderful example of finding joy in serving others.
