John W Butler

July 1, 1940 - February 25, 2015

John W. Butler age 74 died February 25, 2015 of an extended illness. John was disabled for over 30 years. He was the fifth child of Ernest and Margarete Ada Grimes Butler. He was born July 1, 1940 in Greenville, New Hampshire. He lived in Newport Rhode Island in the winter and Greenville in the summer. He joined the New Hampshire National Guard while still in high school. After high school he went on active duty and later joined the US Air Force in 1959 and received a medical discharge in 1962. He served a LDS church service mission helping to build chapels from 1963 to 1965. He later came west to visit his sister Alice and loved the west and stayed. He attended Dixie College graduating with n associate degree in drafting. He then went to BYU majoring in genealogy. He later met and married Shirley Day on October 5, 1979 in the Ogden LDS Temple. They spent many years doing genealogy together. He worked at Hill AFB until he received a medical retirement in 1980. From 1980 until his death he received excellent care from the George Wahlen medical center in Salt Lake City. He was a member of the Clearfield 6th ward for many years and held positions of responsibility until his health caused him to be home bound. Many considered him a gentle giant. He is survived by his wife, three brothers and two sisters, Burton T., Don E., and James all of New Hampshire, Alice Huston of Nevada, and Mabel E. Rogers of Georgia. He also had many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. in Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the LDS church, 220 West 975 North, Sunset, UT with a viewing one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow the services at the Clearfield Cemetery.
