June 4, 1940 - July 2, 2020

Leonel Gonzalez June 4, 1940-July 2, 2020 Life story: Leonel was born and raised in Quechultenango, Guerrero, Mexico. From a very young age, Leonel was a fighter and hard worker who worked tirelessly to provide for his wife, Carmela Ricogual, and five children. His smile was so contagious that anyone who knew him knew how much he enjoyed making someone smile and laugh with his charisma and innocent jokes. He had the utmost admiration and pride for his hometown, Quechultenago, known as Quechul. He spent countless hours caring and providing for his home, children, cattle, farmland, grandchildren, and community. Everyone in Quechul who knew him. People would always call and shout his name on the streets to simply say hello and wish him well. He had the utmost respect from members of his community. He could call on anyone and they would be thrilled to do him a favor. They would say, “Anything for Don Leonel el Cuate”. “Cuate” meaning twin, buddy, and or best friend. Leonel had a long list of names he would be called by, here are a few: El cuate, cuateron, jefe, Leo, papa, abuelito, tio. He will be greatly missed by his wife Carmela, three children, eleven grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, daughters-in-law, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and community members. Leonel spent the last few years of his life traveling back and forth from Mexico and the United States (Park City, Utah) to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He was an adventurer who loved to explore nature, farm, do yard work, go on long walks, and sightsee animals, especially cows. Leonel also worked with his son, Justo and grandson Oscar, at Promontory Club. Leonel would always tell his grandchildren and children that he did not like to be home all day because he was full of life, energy and he wanted to stay active and keep working. At the dinner table, it was a tradition for him to ask for a small shot of tequila or mezcal before eating. He would say that the tequila/mezcal helped him grow his appetite and make every plate taste extra special. He would often tell his grandchildren how proud he was of them and how much it meant to him that they work hard in life to achieve their goals, aspirations and dreams, like he did. Leonel loved sharing stories, anecdotes, fond memories and most of all words of encouragement, like, “Ponte cabrona hija” (Be strong daughter), “Ponte cabron hijo” (Be strong son), “Mis nietas y nietos son chingones (My granddaughters and grandsons are awesome)”, “Esto es una chingoneria” (This is awesomeness).
