Mary Jean "MJ" Metzler

July 17, 1939 - September 5, 2016

Mary Jean Metzler, “MJ”, 77, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully September 5, 2016 surrounded by her daughter Keri Jean Vernieuw, son-in-law Terry Lee Vernieuw and 3 grandchildren, Kayla Ann Vernieuw, Samantha Rae Vernieuw and Abigail Rose Vernieuw. MJ was born in Iowa City, Iowa on July 17th, 1939. She was raised in Storm Lake, Iowa where she attended Storm Lake High School. She lived in St. George, Utah for many years and earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Southern Utah University. She loved reading and researching Native Indian history and artifacts, which lead her into a love for working with clay. She had a pottery wheel which she used for making her own pieces inspired by their history. She also dabbled in art. She had numerous paintings she created of places she had traveled. She loved the outdoors and riding in her Jeep (Jeepin’ she’d say), her transportation to get to the hiking and camping she enjoyed so much. She was an avid gardener and definitely had a green thumb. Her favorite flower was the Daisy. She was an amazing woman and will never be forgotten. She was strong, caring, and had a unique sense of humor. She will be remembered as a very giving person, even to strangers she did not know. She enjoyed working for Catholic Community Services and the people she worked with. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Clifford Fritcher and Vera Jean (Summerbell) Fritcher and her brother, Theodore Clifford Fritcher. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 12 C Street E, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103, on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Condolences can be emailed to [email protected] or flowers can be sent to the First Presbyterian Church.
