Melvin Winsor Carter

Melvin Winsor Carter, Sr., age 82, passed away November 9, 2010 in Provo, Utah. He is reunited with his sweet heart, Clara Louise Adams Carter and daughters, Sarah Lynn and Clarissa May. Born January 22, 1928 in Phoenix, Arizona to Philo Coombs and Mary Cordelia Winsor Carter, the first of 5 children. Melvin served a mission to the Northern States Mission, 1948-1950. Upon his return home, he asked after a beautiful young woman in his ward and they started their courtship. Melvin and Clara were married in the Mesa, Arizona Temple December 15, 1950. Melvin had a love of learning his entire life. He had a distinguished career as a professor of statistics at Brigham Young University, touching many lives. In recognition of devotion to his students, he received the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award in 1978. His work ethic provided for his 15 children and left a legacy for his 64 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Besides serving as bishop to a B.Y.U. ward, Melvin held many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Clara filled 5 missions: McAllen, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; the Salt Lake City Family History Mission twice and in the Provo, Utah mission home. Melvin will be watching over his posterity. Funeral services will be held Saturday November 13, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Provo Sunset 10th ward building, 1402 S 570 W. A visitation will be held an hour prior to the service for family and friends. Burial will be at the Spanish Fork Cemetery.
