Monte Paul Hickenlooper
September 15, 1932 - April 23, 2019
Monte Paul Hickenlooper was born 15 September 1932 in Chico, California, to Harold Joseph Hickenlooper and Rhoda Greatreaks Morrill. A child of the Great Depression, he grew up in San Francisco, where his father drove a Best Food’s Mayonnaise delivery truck and his mother worked night shifts as a registered nurse to help support Monte and his sister Dawn. As a Boy Scout, he earned his Eagle Scout award at age thirteen. Monte attended both Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. He was sealed by Elder John A. Widtsoe to Susan Owen Nelson on August 12, 1952, in the Salt Lake Temple. He and Sue had three children: Debra, Cheryl, and Kent. Monte earned a master’s degree in nuclear chemistry at the University of Washington. His first job out of graduate school was at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, California. Throughout his life he appreciated his strong educational foundation in the sciences and enjoyed discussing his experiences at the “Rad Lab.” Before long, however, he shifted career paths to the early computer industry, working for the IBM Service Bureau Corporation in Palo Alto and eventually transferring to sales, which matched his outgoing personality. A series of opportunities took the family to the East, where they settled in the Connecticut suburbs of New York City in the late 1960s. During this period of social change and political turmoil in American culture, the Hickenlooper family built a solid foundation and forged lasting friendships in Connecticut, especially through their service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Coming of age during the Korean Conflict, Monte did not serve a mission in his youth. Later, however, he served as a counselor to President Albert Choules, Jr., in the New York, New York City Mission. After settling in Cedar Hills, Monte and Sue served as ordinance workers in the Mount Timpanogos Temple and as service missionaries at the Provo MTC. Monte passed away at home of causes incident to age, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters, on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. He is survived by Susan Nelson Hickenlooper; daughters Debra Hickenlooper Sowell (Madison) and Cheryl Lynne Hickenlooper Casazza; grandchildren MariLouise Nelson Sowell Harrow (Brian), Laura Elizabeth Sowell, Kent Jacob Casazza (Paige), Teresa Rose Casazza (Ryan Gandolfo), Caroline Grace Casazza, and Stephanie Lynne Casazza Embry (Sam); and great-grandchildren Jonathan Sowell Harrow, Cecily Ray Harrow, Florence Sue Harrow, Lucy Quinn Casazza, Belle Harper Casazza, Gianna Rose Gandolfo, and Noelle Lynne Massey. He was preceded in death by his son, Kent Nelson Hickenlooper and great-granddaughter Gypsy Rose. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 26th, 11:00 a.m. at the Cedar Hills 7th Ward Chapel, 9737 N. Chesterfield Dr., Cedar Hills, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will precede the services from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at the Highland City Cemetery.
