Paul Grant Spencer

February 9, 1938 - May 2, 2018

On the morning of May 2, 2018, Paul Grant Spencer left his mortal body behind to continue his journey with those that passed before him. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters. Paul was born in Evanston, Wyoming on February 9, 1938 to Adrian Grant Spencer and Lila Mae Cook. He was the second of four children, Marilyn, Lorna, and Lee. He loved racing and building model cars, planes, and boats, and playing football with his friends. He even broke his leg once while skiing, which may explain why he never let the kids go skiing. Paul graduated from Evanston High School in 1956 where he grew to love the arts, playing the alto saxophone and was even in a play. He met Doris Karen Stonebraker and they began to date before he left Evanston for the Navy that same year. While in the Navy, Paul would become an electronics technician and worked on aviation supply and became an electronics instructor. He completed his service in 1960 then returned home to Evanston and married Doris and was later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they raised six children, Dave, Brenda (Jackson Schultz), John (Shawna), Steve (Carla), Cindy (Jody Maestas), and Debbie (Tom Atkins) and have eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Paul pursued a career in the emerging electronics field, working small jobs for a time before securing his career job with the FAA, as one of the first computer engineers in the state of Utah. Paul and Doris moved around a few times before purchasing their first home in Rose Park in 1964. They later moved into their final home next door in 1988. Paul would serve the LDS Church in several capacities over the years, including an Area Seventy, and a stake missionary. The gospel was very important to Paul and he maintained a strong testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Paul continued his love of racing, building a slot car race track in his basement. The kids loved racing with him, even going to slot car races with him around the county. You could always find him eating peanut butter toast and a banana with milk while watching NASCAR. When he taught the kids to drive, it was NASCAR style. He always pushed us to go fast. Paul was also an amazing mechanic! He loved to build, repair, and work on things. He could resurrect anything and make it last much longer than it ever should have! If he wasn’t with his neighborhood boys working on a project, he was in his workshop. He and his friends would still meet after 30+ years every week for Monk Wednesday dinner at Coachman’s. He felt pride in his neighborhood working several years at night with the neighborhood watch. Paul was a wonderful teacher, strict but caring. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We will all miss our wonderful husband, brother, father, and grandfather, and best-friend! Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 760 North 1200 West, Salt Lake City, UT. Viewing will be one hour prior to the services. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2:30 p.m. following the services at the Evanston City, Cemetery in Evanston WY.
