Phyllis Marilyn Shumway

August 19, 1929 - August 1, 2016

Phyllis Marilyn (Hurst) Shumway 1929 – 2016 Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 1st, 2016 Born on August 19th 1929 to Clifford Arlington Hurst and Ethel Wilson Hurst. Born to a large family and raised in Akron, Ohio, Mom grew up during the great Depression, with a strong set of values. From her mother she learned the old school homemaker skills of sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and just about any other type of hand work. Over the years she perfected these skills, and enjoyed them immensely. On February 21st, 1953, she married Leland G. Shumway jr. Together they realized their dreams and began a family and a life of travel and adventure. As an Aerospace Field Service Representative, Dad constantly moved the family to various locations around the U.S. and overseas for his job assignments. Mom had to pack up and move the household and kids more times than we can count. On Dad's assignments to war zones, Mom had to hold down the fort at whatever location was home, riding herd on five rambunctious kids. More than once on remote overseas assignments Mom had to home school all her children. (whether they liked it or not). As the nest emptied, Mom needed to stay busy, and volunteered her time with the officers Wives Club by running the Bitburg AFB Thrift Store, and anything else she could. After Dad retired in 1984, they returned to their native Akron, Ohio to live. When Dad passed away in 2005, Mom came west to Utah to be close to family. Left to cherish her memory are her dearest sisters, Shirley Stickney and Marlene Hurst of Daytona Beach, Florida, and her Children: Lee (Janis) Brigham City Ut., Jay (Jing) Agusan del sur, Phillippines, John (Tracy) Volga WV, Eric (Lisa) Syracuse Ut. Maureen (Tony) Duncan, Syracuse Ut. Also survived by a passel of Grandkids and Great Grandkids to carry on her legacy. Special thanks to Apple Village Retirement Home, and Inspiration Hospice for your professional and compassionate care of our Mom. No public services.
