Retired Brigham Young University organic chemistry professor Richard Thomas Hawkins passed from this mortal existence December 12, 2013, in Orem, Utah, at the age of 84. Richard was born September 9, 1929, in Provo, Utah, to Willard Davis Hawkins and Wilma Stolworthy. As a teen he distinguished himself as a clarinetist and performed in a local professional orchestra in his twenties, but chose to pursue a career in science rather than music. Following his military service, Richard earned his doctorate in chemistry at the University of Illinois. He then accepted a position on the BYU chemistry faculty, where he taught organic chemistry from 1959 until retirement in 1995. Richard was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served faithfully in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher, choir director, high councilor, and bishop. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie (August 27, 2000), and brother, Carl Stolworthy Hawkins. Richard is survived by his brother Floyd Keith Hawkins and sister Barbara Allred; his children Vance (Lisa) Hawkins, Alice (Brad) Harward, and Nancy (Bob) Drabicki; 13 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Viewings will be held Monday, December 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, December 17, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., in the LDS meetinghouse at 865 West 1000 North, Orem.
