October 16, 1920 - August 16, 2021
Selma “Sam” Harris passed away on August 16, 2021. Sam was born in Hampton, Nebraska, the thirteenth child out of fourteen children born to Reverend H. William Meyer and Emma Louise Kruse. Sam moved to and lived in Oxford, NE as a young girl until her father accepted a calling to Zion Lutheran Church in the little town of Worms, NE. When she was in her teens, she visited her sisters who were living in Utah where their husbands were working for the Bingham Copper Mine, and she immediately fell in love with the mountains. Early in her married life, she lived in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, New York, and Texas but when they moved to Utah for work at Hill AFB, she felt she was truly home. She married Donald A. J. Meyer and together they had four children. They divorced, and she later married Darrell D. Harris. She and Darrell enjoyed many camping and other traveling trips. She had a great sense of humor and could find something funny, even in times of trouble. Many family dinners were filled with funny stories and laughter. Sam had a very active life raising four children. She was a people person and loved interacting with anyone, so she really enjoyed working part time in retail at Sears and Bon Marche. Later on, she was employed at and retired from Defense Depot Ogden. She loved her garden and looked forward to planting new flowers every spring to enjoy all summer. She liked dancing, listening to all kinds of good music, and watching Utah Jazz games. She is survived by her four children: Ron (Jean) Meyer of Golden, CO; Brent (Pat) Meyer of Centennial, CO; Vicki (Dave) Berrett of Layton, UT; Margo (Jerry) Culwell of Washington Terrace, UT; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell, her parents, and 13 siblings. Sam committed her life to Jesus over 40 years ago. Her strong faith and prayers for friends and family were some of her endearing qualities. The family wants to extend a special thanks to the many friends, family, and caregivers who contributed to Mom’s quality of life in her later years. She had a great impact in the lives of all her family members, and she will be forever treasured and remembered. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 22, at Washington Heights Church located at 1770 E. 6200 S. in Ogden, UT. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the church, and the service will follow at 3:30 pm. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.premierfuneral.com.
