Sylvia Loretta Bailey
August 20, 1954 - November 24, 2021
Sylvia Loretta (Johnson) Bailey, was born August 20, 1954 in Valley, Alabama. She went to be with loved ones gone before November 24, 2021, at home in South Ogden, Utah. She was continually surrounded and loved by her husband, Colonel (Ret) Charles Bailey, her daughter, Major Shamika N. Woodruff, her son in law, Mr. Robert Woodruff, her granddaughter, Jillian, her Everest hospice team, Ms. Bobbie Salterain, her private aide, and the numerous thoughts and prayers of family members and friends from all over our country. The youngest of eight children, Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents Marvin and Bessie Mae (Boyd) Johnson, her sisters Kattie, Mary Florence, Ruby and Cynthia, and her brother John (Bubba). She leaves behind her brother Joseph (Sonny) and her sister Carolyn along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sylvia graduated from the former Brown High School in Atlanta, Georgia and earned a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition Science from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. She was a lifelong learner and enjoyed reading the latest research on all topics related to health. Sylvia and Charles were high school sweethearts. They went on to enjoy almost 44 years of marriage which included 30 wonderful years of military service to our country followed by 14 years of blissful retirement. As a mother of two beautiful children (Curtis and Shamika) and a military spouse, Sylvia participated in numerous school and military spouse events. Personally, she excelled in distance running, winning numerous trophies that are still on display in her home. She also played tennis and golf. Sylvia was a member of the local Misfits golf team, where she also won numerous individual and team awards. She loved hikes in the mountains with her husband, her granddogs, Roxy, Gracie and Raven, being grandma to Jillian and was a relentless Scrabble player. Sylvia started the battle for her life in February 2019 when tests revealed a brain tumor known as Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). Sylvia had several surgeries to remove two recurrences, both requiring multiple rounds of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Though there were tough days, she was a fighter and was steadfast to the very end. We are eternally grateful for the unyielding support from the medical teams who supported Sylvia. Finally, we could not have made it this far without the love and support received from all the family members, friends, and neighbors who were constantly praying for Sylvia and wishing her the best. Thank you. We love you Sylvia, Mom, and Grandma! There will not be a funeral. Sylvia's final wish was to be cremated and have her ashes spread in Alaska. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation on behalf of Sylvia to the Glioblastoma Foundation. To share the news of your donation with the family, list [email protected] on the donation form.
