November 23, 1931 - December 19, 2020
Victoria Smith Chipman, 89, passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2020 in Provo, Utah. Vicky was born in Los Angeles, California to Ralph Athay Smith and Victoria Maughan Howell. She grew up in Los Angeles. She and her parents loved playing badminton, cards, and taking drives in nature. During World War II, she remembers pulling down black-out curtains, riding the streetcar to go to the movies, and that meat and butter were a rare treat! She was a good student and played the violin beautifully. Vicky went to Pomona College, then transferred to University of Utah. She studied English Literature and Music. During her last year, she decided to take all the classes required to receive a degree in Elementary Education so she could support herself. She hated the classes but loved teaching school. She also took organ lessons from a famous organist, and was organist in many congregations throughout her life. When Vicky graduated, she went home to California for the summer and met Bob, who was in grad school and working at UCLA. She decided to stay and teach in California. They were married a few years later in the Salt Lake Temple, and were blessed with five children who were the light of their lives. Bob and Vicky were both only children and they were especially delighted with the continual growth of their family: children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Vicky loved music and literature and shared that love with all of her family. She also appreciated the beauty of nature. This, combined with Bob’s love of camping and backpacking, paved the way for many memorable family trips, whether living in California, Michigan or Colorado. Vicky loved gardening, family history, playing games, and visiting with family and friends. Vicky is survived by her children: Susan (Paul) Barker, Kathryn Jensen, David (Lisa) Chipman, Christine (Ed) Formica and daughter-in-law Camille Chipman. She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Chipman and her husband, Bob. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. The Zoom memorial service for Vicky will be held on Sunday, December 27 at 2 pm Mountain Time. If you would like a link to the service, contact the mortuary or one of her children for more information. Interment will be held at a future time at Lehi City Cemetery. Vicky is cherished by family and friends and will be missed deeply and loved eternally.
