Our hearts are weeping. Gary always lite up a room, his laughter and smile brightened our lives. He went out of his way to welcome our boys in any Young Men's' activities and especially to help our Jordan fit in. Anyone who associated with Gary was blessed by his kindness. Tod and Mary Ann Cook
We have so many fond memories of the whole Yates family. Gary and Tauna were such great people and had such an impact on many. We were blessed in so many ways to live by these great people and have our children grow up with them. We are sending and love and prayers at this time. Kent and Linda Simonson and family.
I only knew Gary for four years but his impact on me was amazing we would have great talks about our aging life. We also shared our cancer scares we both had. I truly loved this guy and our trips were always fun. I know he will still be there to listen when you need someone special to talk to. Till we meet age . Love Kuana
One of my fondest memories as a teenager was a snowmobile trip that we all took! I still remember Gary pulling a sled with Donny Ebert in it, laughing like there was no tomorrow! I'll always remember Gary with that infectious smile he always had on his face. What a blessing it was for all of us to grow up, as friends, in such a wonderful neighborhood.
I've known Gary for many years through work. He hauled equipment all over the place for us, even continuing to help out sometimes after he "retired"
I remember one time coming home from New Mexico, I had failed to give him some paperwork and an officer wouldn't let him leave the port without it. I turned around and drove back to the port with the paperwork he needed. Most truckers I know would've been so upset about the delay (it made it impossible for him to get home that night, so he had to sleep in his truck Price UT) but Gary was so kind. I bought him a burger and he was smiling/joking as we got back on the road. He has always been a great example and friend!
Gary — Brother Yates — was one of my favorite people. When he moved to Bluffdale, he was assigned to be my family’s home teacher. You would have thought that calling was the most important in the church as he was the epitome of a home teacher. He constantly checked in on us and was so excited to hear about my volleyball games or how my mission papers were going. I felt like he was a part of our family. He even showed up to my wedding almost a decade later. He was always offering to serve, crack a joke, share a testimony or a smile. I looked up to him in more ways than i can count. He was so loved and will be so missed.

A month ago we drove back to Utah from Ohio. Our car made the trip without problems but developed a small leak. In Riverton we were going to see family when my engine light came on showing overheating. We pulled into Walmart, it was late and the car shops were closed and I was stranded with my 3 little kids and wife in the car. I grabbed my kids and started walking in to try and get a few supplies. Gary just happened to pull up at the perfect moment and spotted me (his wife being my Mom’s cousin it took us a minute to realize how we knew each other). He asked to help and happened to have all the tools we needed in his truck and enough anti-freeze to fill it up. He was an answer to prayer. I asked if I could pay him back for the supplies and he replied “yes, by telling your Dad I say hi”. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and won’t forget his kindness that day.
Gary was like family. He always greeted us with a smile. He was such a mentor to our youngest son during his high school years. He still has incredibly wonderful memories of Gary. He made my girls feel special. When our last daughter got married, he worked so hard at the reception like it was his own daughter. We could not have pulled off the wedding that day if it wasn’t for Gary, his wife and his daughters. Gary and his wife also helped us so much when I was ill and was in the hospital for weeks. They brought food, worked in my yard, picked the fruit off my trees, checked on my family, and showed us so much love. He even came over late one night and helped my husband winterize our trailer. My husband had no idea what he was doing, but Gary taught him and they had a great time doing it together. Gary would always talk to us and have a joke or a laugh with us. We are so grateful that Gary was a part of our lives. We are glad that our sweet nephew Jason married their wonderful daughter, because it made our connection with them even greater. Besides being neighbors, we were family.

A memory that came to mind was my friend riding on the back of Uncle Gary’s snowmobile. My dad and I were stuck and so Gary went to turn around and help us. Uncle Gary and my friend went up the smallest hill (if you even want to call it a hill-it was that small) to help us. Watching this whole thing, Uncle Gary slid off the snowmobile for some unknown reason leaving my friend by herself on the backseat, not ever having driven a snowmobile, to crash into my dad’s snowmobile. It was like watching a cartoon scene! 😂
