Alene Redd Roberts' Obituary
Alene Redd Roberts
1929 - 2022
Alene Redd Roberts of Provo, Utah passed away July 4, 2022. Alene was born in Monticello, Utah March 16, 1929. She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Elliott Roberts, who died only 9 days before on June 25, 2022.
She is also preceded in death by her parents Amasa Jay Redd and Alice Marie Ekins Redd of Monticello, Utah, her sister Imogene Redd Hess, and two brothers, Wyman Harrison Redd and Stephen Ekins Redd, of Monticello, Utah.
She is survived by her daughters Emily Lauritzen (Mark) of Danbury, Connecticut, Christie Atkinson (Doug) of Orem, Utah, and Cynthia Shaw (Jeff) of Highland, Utah and her sons Dwain Roberts (Caroline) of Jefferson City, Missouri and Whitney Roberts (Lisa) of Pleasant Grove, Utah. She is also survived by two brothers, Amasa Mason Redd (Karen) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jay Whitney Redd (Shirley) of Monticello, Utah.
Alene and Elliott were married in the Salt Lake Temple June 23, 1952 and have 5 children, 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Alene, along with her brother Mason, contracted polio at the age of 10, which in her later years caused an accelerated physical decline with loss of mobility and strength, confining her to a wheelchair. Despite the illness in her early youth, she developed into a strong young woman, who rode horses, hiked, and otherwise matched or exceeded the physical capabilities of many of her peers.
Alene graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Drama and English. She was a natural writer and storyteller. Although she wrote an unpublished children’s book while raising her children, her family responsibilities came first. She at last became a published author with her first book, Fragrance of Lilacs, at the age of 70. She successfully published 11 romance novels before declining health limited her writing. She strictly adhered to the writer’s ethos to make the world better through her stories.
Alene was a devoted wife and mother of five children. She was loved and adored by all her children, who were profoundly influenced by her constant teaching, love of country, and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was naturally fearless in the cause of Christ and served others in many capacities. Her influence extended far beyond her own family. Young and old naturally sought out her friendship and advice.
She will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.
Graveside service for Alene and Elliott will be held at 9:30 am on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at the Highland City Cemetery, 6200 West 11000 North, Highland, Utah. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately after at 10:00 am, Tuesday, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 11300 N. Highland Boulevard, Highland, Utah.
