Allen John Hewitt's Obituary
Allen John Hewitt, lovingly known as Ron in his younger years and later as Al or Slim, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at the age of 90, surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren.
Allen was born on March 1, 1936, to Herbert and Estella Allen. A hardworking entrepreneur from an early age, he sold newspapers on the streets of Salt Lake City, mowed lawns, and, as a teenager, started SL Flooring, laying hardwood floors throughout the valley. Over the years he delivered prescriptions, moved homes, laid concrete, worked as a brick mason, bought and sold homes, and proved there was little he couldn't do.
He later moved to California, where he worked for TRW, participated in a Think Tank, and attended El Camino College. Returning to Utah, he graduated from the University of Utah and went on to work at the Brain Research Laboratory with Ted Beck, teach construction at Salt Lake Community College, and directed Salt Lake County Senior Citizens Nutrition Centers. As a general contractor, Allen and his beloved wife, Jean, built Hewitt Enterprises, buying, building, and renovating properties throughout Utah and Washington. He was respected not only for his craftsmanship but also as a fair and kind landlord.
On November 2, 1968, Allen married the love of his life, Jean. They were inseparable, sharing work, travel, laughter, and a lifetime of holding hands and stealing kisses. Their love was an inspiration, and we find comfort knowing they are together again.
Allen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He cherished his daughters, adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was endlessly proud of his family.
Known for his quick wit, generous spirit, and remarkable ability to solve any problem, Allen never met a stranger. He loved classic Westerns, traveling, sharing meals with family and friends, and was a favorite among restaurant staff wherever he went. Every dog seemed to know he was a friend, and they loved him as much as he loved them.
Allen is survived by his daughters: Suzanne DeLyle (Atle), Lynda Davis (Joe), and Merrilee Hewitt; grandchildren: Reini (Jared), Everett, Matthew (Maren), Joey (Martha), Bobby, Mike (Brienn), Christopher, and Darcy; 14 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Janice Darlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents: his beloved wife, Jean; daughters: Jayne’ Federmeyer and Jeanne Scheffer; grandson: Byron; sisters: Afton, Betty and Lillian; and brothers: Leo, Eddy, and Vern.
Allen leaves behind a tremendous void in the hearts of those who loved him. We will forever miss his laugh, his stories, his wisdom, his unwavering work ethic, his loyalty, his generous heart, and the way he made everyone feel valued. His legacy lives on through the family he loved so deeply and the countless lives he touched.
Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Scott Hacking, whose compassionate care and friendship meant the world to Allen and Jean. They loved him as a son. We also thank the caring staff at Spring Gardens of Holladay for the kindness and dignity they showed Allen during his final months, and the many friends he made there who brought him joy and companionship.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 31, at 10:00 am at Elysian Burial Gardens. We invite family and friends to join us in celebrating the extraordinary life of a man who loved deeply, worked tirelessly, laughed often, and made the world a better place.
