Anthony "Tony" Domenichello's Obituary
On April 25, 2015 , another warrior of the Greatest Generation passed on to his next assignment. Anthony Domenichello, our uncle Tony died in Kaysville, Utah after a brief battle with his health just 17 days after celebrating his hundredth birthday with family and friends. Tony was the second son born to Pasqualina and Vito Domenichello in New York City, New York on April 8, 1915. Throughout his life he remained physically active, enjoying boxing, swimming, biking and skiing. He moved to Utah and found employment with the Remington Arms Company, then the Union Pacific Railroad until the out-break of WWII. He joined the US Navy and was assigned to serve on the USS Fanshaw Bay CVE 70 escort carrier. Tony and his crewmates were involved in the fiercest fighting of the Pacific theater, culminating with the defeat of the enemy forces in the largest sea battle in human history at Leyte Gulf. Due to their extraordinary service the carrier received 5 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. Throughout the remainder of his life, Tony was true and faithful to his shipmates and always attended their reunions. After the conclusion of the war, Tony returned to Utah and began working at Geneva Steel. In 1958 he married Ada Rasmussen, to whom he remained a loyal and devoted husband until Ada’s passing in 2011. During their years of marriage they traveled extensively throughout the world and the US. During the period of Ada’s illness, Tony was her attentive and loving caregiver, never leaving her presence. His actions on her behalf served as a Christ-like example to all who observed his efforts. He was a knowledgeable student of history, and a lover of the arts and music. As his ability to hear weakened with age, he missed listening with clarity the music of his era. Tony was always ready to offer his opinion to any and all who would listen. He was a generous person who loved little children, always stopping to greet the little ones with kind comments. Tony’s two brothers, Nicholas and Pasquale preceded him in death, and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews from the Domenichello family, and Ada’s family of Rasmussens. Sincere thanks to Inspiration Hospice for their attentive care of Tony’s needs the past 6 months, and a loving salute to the staff at The Villas at Baer Creek assisted living center in Kaysville for providing a gentle atmosphere for him to enjoy the remaining few weeks of his life. His only regret is not having been able to take the journey with the Honor Flight organization to Washington D.C. A graveside service will be 11:00 am, Friday, May 1, 2015 the Provo City cemetery. There will be a U.S. Navy honor guard to honor Tony’s service.
