Arthur David Malan Jr.'s Obituary
Arthur David Malan Jr. passed away peacefully with the love of his life by his side on Friday June 24, 2022. “Junior” was born on February 10, 1940 in Ogden, Utah to Arthur David Malan Sr. & Myrtle Mae Oram. His older sister Mae adores her baby brother. She was his protector yet she loved him enough to put him in his place. Art assisted in running the family orchard along Cherry Lane in Layton. His favorite responsibility was driving the truck to deliver crates of cherries to the Rock Loft in Fruit Heights. He attended Lorin Farr Elementary school on 22nd street in Ogden. As kids every time we drove by the school we would excitedly shout out,”There’s Dad’s school.” He’s a proud graduate of Ogden High School.
Art followed in the footsteps of his father and began working at the Standard Examiner in downtown Ogden. This led to trade school and he became a dedicated printer at the Paper. He was passionate about the Paper and worked long hours on the weekends and around the holidays to meet deadlines. It was his home away from home. He loved when his family came to visit him at work and would sneak away for a bite at Blimpie’s.
He chose to put his paper career on hold for two and a half years to serve the Lord and the people of Hong Kong. While there he mastered the difficult language of Cantonese. He loved teaching the people of Hong Kong which made a lasting impression on him. He received many blessings as a result of serving his mission, including returning to the Paper.
He met Jolene Kerr soon after he returned home from his mission. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple and were blessed to raise three children. They also had the privilege of parenting an autistic foster child, Codee, for a year while she attended the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.
Art was dedicated to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was an honor for him to serve as a stake executive secretary, ward clerk and in many other callings. He understood the importance of ministering and loved visiting the members of the 67th Ward on the East Bench in Ogden and the South Weber 6th Ward. It was said that he was the best home teaching companion by a long shot. As his daughter, I can attest to this as I was his companion when I was a little girl.
He loved his children dearly yet when the grandchildren came along his favorite title was Grandpa. He adores his five grandsons. He taught by example as he had a strong work ethic. His hobby was work itself. On his day off you would find him in the garden, working in the yard or fixing something around the house. When he relaxed he would watch the news, enjoy a root beer float or dive into a bowl of bread and milk. Pastries made him smile, especially if they were homemade by his sweetheart, Jolene.
He labored in life with the Lord as he did in his final week here on earth. He died with honor in his home surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends bustling about the house.
Art is preceded in death by his parents Arthur & Myrtle Malan, and his son Richard. He is survived by his wife Jolene, daughters, Vicki (Daniel Sorensen), Michele and daughter-in-law Ashlee/ His five grandchildren, Austin, Spencer, Reese, Jensen and Maddox. His sister, Mae McFarland, along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
We would like to thank with deep gratitude the tender care of Rocky Mountain Hospice (Marty, Allie, Rose, Amanda, and Todd), family, friends, neighbors and ward members. You gifted us the most beautiful final week.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 1:00 pm in the South Weber 6th Ward Chapel, 2620 E 8200 S, South Weber, Utah. A viewing will be held at 11:30 am prior to the service. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton.
