Barbara Ann Shurtliff Hill's Obituary
Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Barbara Ann (Shurtliff) Hill, who everyone lovingly called “Dabee,” passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, surrounded by the family she cherished.
Barbara was born on July 29, 1939, in Provo, Utah, to Francis L. Shurtliff and Lois Van Wagenen. On August 8, 1962, she married her sweetheart, Jerry Finley Hill, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti, Utah Temple on April 27, 1963, sealing their eternal bond.
She grew up in Salt Lake City and attended both Olympus and South High Schools, graduating as valedictorian of her class from South High. Barbara continued her education at the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Barbara served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She especially treasured her time as Primary President, as a Relief Society teacher, and as a missionary in Chicago, Illinois, where her compassion, wisdom, and light touched the lives of many.
Barbara is survived by her seven children: Holly H. Peterson (Steve, deceased), Jeffrey S. Hill, Heidi H. Ellis (Gary), Heather Hill, Jason S. Hill (Melissa), Joseph S. Hill (Trish), and Jonathan S. Hill (Mary); along with twenty treasured grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Shurtliff (Sue), and her sister, Patsy Shaw (Stan). She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, her brother, David, and her son-in-law, Steve.
Barbara was a true ray of sunshine—radiating warmth and joy wherever she went. She had an extraordinary gift for making people feel loved. Her listening ear, open heart, and ever-ready smile made her an instant friend to all who knew her.
Above all, Barbara’s greatest joy and deepest devotion was her family. She loved each of us unconditionally and completely—with all of her heart and soul.
Barbara was truly a light in the world—a beautiful example of all that is good. Her legacy is one of kindness, faith, and sunshine. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
