I came to know Bernice through her son, Tom. He asked me if I would help volunteer with/for her at the food pantry in Winston. This was in early 2020, and led to me working with Bernice on Wednesday mornings for about the next 5 years. Sometime later, my mother (Rose) moved in across the hall from her at The Landing, and they became pretty good friends. I enjoyed seeing Bernice many days when I would be over to visit mom. My favorite memory of her would be the last day that I saw her, which was the night before she moved to Utah. We had a going away dinner (pizza, spuds, and cake) for her, along with my mom and wife (Robin), in my mom's apartment. We talked for quite a while afterwards and learned some things about each other we hadn't previously known. It was bittersweet, because we all really enjoyed the night, but we knew that we would say goodbye and likely not see her again.
Bernice was a good friend to mom and I both. We miss her, but we trust that she's gone to be with The Lord, and that does my heart a lot of good knowing that.
