Brent Delbert Popp's Obituary
Brent Delbert Popp
September 23, 1945-November 9, 2025
Brent Delbert Popp, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away in his home, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 9, 2025, the same day his older brother, Gary, passed away 71 years ago. After beating cancer twice, he left this life on his terms, choosing not to have any further interventions. He was a fighter.
Brent was born September 23, 1945, to Max William Popp and Gladys Louise Mathews. He was the second of four children. He enjoyed a fun childhood full of family, friends, outdoor adventures, mischief, and the award-winning Shetland Pony, Kirby. He had so much fun sharing his childhood memories and stories that brought him so much joy. He made life-long friends that he had so much fun with up to his very last moments.
Brent graduated from Olympus High School. He then served in the National Guard, which allowed him to march in the funeral procession of JFK. He then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, in the Toronto, Canada area. On the day he was going home he met his “honey”, the love of his life, who was serving in the same mission. Together they shared their mission stories and love for the people in Canada and those they served with.
Brent married his “honey”, Lynn Marie Oviatt, on July 26, 1968, in the Salt Lake City Temple. He adored her and always wanted to be by her side. He took such good care of her and often spoiled her with fun surprises. They spent 57 years together building a strong posterity. Together they created many fun traditions for our family; Labor Day cookouts in Millcreek Canyon, digging potatoes in Idaho, celebrating St. Lucia with our shoes under the Christmas tree, grandkids pitching tents in their back yard, watching outdoor movies on their garage door, 4th of July parade in Millcreek followed by fireworks at their house, St. George in July, snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, and many more. We still enjoy these traditions and love being together. His family is his greatest joy, and we know he will still be with us whatever we are doing.
Brent spent his career in the carpet industry and had a reputation for perfection. He often traveled out of state on big jobs, which his sons would sometimes join him on. He was skilled at hand carving designs in carpets and was a true craftsman. He was an active member of the LDS church and served in many leadership positions. He is loved and adored by the members of the wards where he served.
Brent’s hobbies were cooking, being in the canyon, serving others, snowmobiling, shooting his guns, grocery shopping, and gardening. He is known for his delicious tomatoes. He shared this talent with whoever wanted to learn his magic gardening system. He also has a big garage that is stocked with only the top-of-the-line tools, Dutch ovens, and many custom-made accessories. He shared it all with whoever had a need.
Brent is known for giving his best and doing it big! His reputation preceded him; whatever he was involved in would be done to perfection because, as he often said, “the best is none too good”. One of his favorite things to do was filling his root cellar with thousands of pounds of potatoes and then delivering them to his friends and neighbors. It brought him so much joy!
Brent’s family knew that he would drop whatever he was doing for anything they needed. He taught his kids and grandkids to love big, to serve with all their heart, to work hard and play hard, and that family always comes first. We will all strive to carry on that legacy.
Brent is loved, admired and already deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Gladys; his brother, Gary; and his brother-in-law, Rich Van Orden. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; his children, Greg Popp (Allison), Jeff Popp (Krissi), and Tiffany Wilko (Tyler); 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Vicki Van Orden and Debbie Roberts (Ron).
In lieu of a viewing, a celebration of Brent’s life will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Imperial 2nd Ward building, 2738 S Filmore Street. A private viewing (by invitation only) will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., also at 2738 S Filmore Street. Brent will be laid to rest at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S Highland Drive.
