Carolyn Hollis' Obituary
Hassie Carolyn Hollis, age 77, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Dec. 1, 2014 with family at her side. Her passing was due to complications of pancreatic cancer. Carolyn was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL on Nov 21, 1937, to Juliette Lewis Hopper and Willie Mel Hollis. Carolyn’s fondest childhood memories were of her extended family and friends in the Hogan-Spring Glen community. Carolyn later moved to Northside and Garden City. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School where she immersed herself in a love of learning and music, interests she pursued throughout her life. Carolyn married Dean M. Vincent in 1957 (later divorced.) Together, they had three children who were the joy of her life. The family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed many associations there. Carolyn loved the emphasis on family life within the Mormon faith. Carolyn also married Fred Corbin in 1999 (later divorced.) Carolyn had a rewarding career that spanned a variety of positions and industries, including key-punch operator, secretary, office manager, real estate sales, and philanthropic & community relations work which garnered prestigious company awards. Her most valued work was with the Jacksonville Bicentennial Commission at George Linville Realty, community education programs at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and technical writing at WordPerfect. Carolyn was passionate about music and gardening. Her zest to learn & do resulted in great knowledge, broad experiences, and friendships in both interests throughout her lifetime. She sang in choral groups and choirs, including Sweet Adelines and The Robert Shaw Chorale, and many others, in Jacksonville, Charlotte, Atlanta and Salt Lake City. Carolyn’s magnificent flower gardens produced awards but mostly gifts of beautiful bouquets for countless grateful recipients. Her vegetable gardens supplied a handsome storage shelf or two! After retirement, Carolyn fostered many hobbies including kayaking, fishing, ballroom dancing, joke & story reciting, and international travel, all of which brought her much pleasure and new friendships. Carolyn’s supreme joy was living in Utah near her grandchildren. Admittedly, the most ‘spoiling’ Grandma in town, their adventures at parks, ice cream parlors, movie theaters, and sleep-overs will never be forgotten. When the grandchildren grew up, she became nanny to the Stehling family and others, whom she dearly loved. In her later years, Carolyn’s love of country and of Jesus Christ became a source of study, devotion and profound gratitude. She expressed concern and hope for America and peaceful testimony of the encompassing atonement of Jesus Christ and life beyond the grave. Her family extends deep appreciation to devoted friends of her church and neighborhood, the SOUL community garden, Murray Arts Center & American Legion, Cameo Club and to Huntsman Cancer Institute, especially the caring staffs of Clinic 1-A, Infusion, Acute Care, and H-4 Inpatient. Carolyn is survived by her three children - Keith M. Vincent (Linda), Keri D. Skousen (Grant), and Joni O. Vincent (England); five grandchildren – Daniel, Donny, Hannah, Danielle, and Lecy; mother – Juliette Lovvorn; stepmother – Thelma Hollis; sister – Marjorie Haynes (Harold); brotherly cousin – Jason Hancock (Ellen), and many more loving cousins. Carolyn was preceded in death by her father – Willie Mel Hollis; and her stepfather – J.D. Lovvorn. On Wednesday Dec. 17, 2014, a viewing will be held from 9:30 – 10:40 a.m. and funeral services will follow at 11a.m. The services will be held at the LDS Little Cottonwood 14th Ward, 1160 East Vine St., Murray, Utah.
