Stephen and I and our family send our condolences to Ruthie and the Egan family. We have missed having Norm across the street and we will miss knowing he shares this world with us. Norm was a man of integrity, a welcoming friend and one of the anchors of our neighborhood.
When we moved across the street from Norm and Ruthie twenty-three years ago, they were the first to welcome our little family to the neighborhood. When we started remodeling our home, Norm provided excellent references for contractors we might use, and offered his discounts (which we took advantage of!) for any new appliances we might need to purchase. Norm and Ruthie even attended one of our son's soccer games when he was in high school, when they had plenty of other games to attend for their own family members. What a genuinely caring neighbor Norm was, and he always made us feel perfectly at home in our neighborhood.
We watched Norm manage his construction business over many years, conferring with Ruth on which color combination would be most attractive for the home he was building next. We were able to visit one of the homes Norm built, and the perfect craftsmanship in the home was very evident. It was as much art as construction. When he spoke of the jobs he was working on, it was clear that there was nothing about his business that did not speak of honest dealings, integrity, respect for both his purchasers and his sub-contractors, and pride in the quality of work he was doing. What a legacy he and Ruth have created in the many beautiful homes he built in the valley! I think, too, that Norm took pride in living in this neighborhood, in the midst of many homes he had built with such care.
The legacy I think of most with Norm's passing, however, is the legacy he leaves as a wonderful father. Could there be any nicer, more caring people than Norm and Ruth's children and grandchildren? Each time we see one of them, it brightens our day. We are anxious to see Ruthie again too once the pandemic eases. Friendship, strength, hard work, honesty and love. That is the Norm Egan we celebrate and miss so.
