Dale Douglas Openshaw's Obituary
Dale Douglas Openshaw
1931 - 2018
Dale Douglas Openshaw, age 86, died peacefully at his home in Sandy, Utah, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, May 27, 2018.
He was born July 28, 1931, in Vernal, Utah, the first of three children. He learned the valuable lessons of hard work alongside his father and other family members throughout his youth. He carried this value into his adult life, working for JC Penney Company and operating his own crystal recognition award business well into his 86th year.
Music was a big part of Dale’s early life; he played the trumpet with a small orchestra for dances and other events before leaving for missionary service.
Dale served in the New Zealand Auckland mission from 1953 to 1956, returning home to marry his sweetheart, Dorothy Dean Nixon, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 20, 1956. Together they raised four children.
Dale was a devoted, loyal husband and father. He was a wonderful leader in the home. His love and respect for Dorothy was an example to all. He was highly regarded among business associates as well as in community service. He had the ability to bring peace and resolution to many important situations.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Bishop, Stake Executive Secretary, as a member of several high councils, and a member of the ward choir throughout his lifetime. He especially enjoyed working with the youth of his ward.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Glenn Openshaw and Ada Eunice Olsen Openshaw and his brother-in-law, Norman Haslem. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sisters Fae Evans and Janna Haslem; children Douglas, Deanna, David, and Darren and their families; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Profound gratitude is expressed to Hospice for Utah workers, ward members, friends, and family for visits and tender loving care during his last months.
Funeral services will be held12:00 Noon, Saturday, June 2, 2018, at the Willow Creek Stake Center, 2350 E.
