Dr. Daryl John McCarty's Obituary
Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Daryl John McCarty, Sr., passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on May 13, 1930 in Garfield, Utah to Emerson Eugene McCarty, Sr. and Amy Jackson McCarty. He married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Brown, on October 13, 1950 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and together they raised four children.
Daryl accomplished many notable achievements during his lifetime and set a great example for his children by working hard and putting in an honest day’s work. He graduated from Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah and served in the United States Army. Daryl went on to earn a B.S., M.S., and a Doctorate (Ed.D) Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Utah. Daryl began his career as an elementary school teacher and was later a Principal. He was hired as the Executive Director for the Utah Education Association and later was the Associate Superintendent for the Utah State Office of Education. He also worked for Utah Rural Schools Association, Wasatch Education Systems, Utah Retired School Employees Association, and Utah State University – Utah Assistive Technology Program/Foundation. He served on various professional organizations and was recognized with numerous honors and awards for his service, too numerous to list. He was actively involved in Utah and national politics, including running for Utah Congress and serving as the Democratic National Committeeman. He had the honor of working alongside many brilliant and talented individuals over the years and enjoyed lasting friendships and associations.
Family and faith were paramount to Daryl. He and his wife, Helen, served as Host/Hostess at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in SLC, then a full-time Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California, San Diego Mission. This was truly a highlight for Daryl. He served in many Church Callings and was an inspired teacher and leader.
