David S Smith's Obituary
David S Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. A lifelong educator and a man of unwavering kindness, David spent decades teaching and shaping the lives of countless students. His classroom was a place of curiosity, encouragement, and quiet wisdom, an extension of the generosity he carried into every corner of his life.
Born on November 26 1941, David came into the world with a brilliant mind and an even bigger heart. To those who knew him, he was the smartest man in the room, but he never used that intelligence to elevate himself. Instead, he used it to lift others.
David was a devoted and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. He served faithfully in many capacities, offering his time, leadership, and compassion wherever he was called. His service included a mission to the Brazil South Mission, a defining experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to faith, people, and community.
He graduated from Brigham Young University with a masters degree in education and lived a life defined by service, humility, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of others. He never missed an opportunity to help someone in need, and he ALWAYS saw the good in people, often before they could see it in themselves.
David is survived by his devoted wife, Sue Lynne Smith, and by a large and loving family who will forever carry his example with them. He was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Jane Smith, his nephew Jack Smith and his son in law John Straight.
His children and grandchildren include:
Lise and (John); Melinda, Suzanna, Elinore, Jennette, and Maria Straight
Kristina and Sam; Dru, Zac, James, and Tye Belnap
Ted and Cel; Davey, Annie, and Matthew Smith
Billie and Richie Aldaba
Keith and Cami; Wrigley and
Ryne Smith
He is also survived by his sister and brother Gehla Knight (Richard Porterfield) and Don Smith (Shari Kovac), who will remember him for his warmth, humor, and the deep loyalty he showed to his family throughout his life.
David lived a life of purpose, faith, and quiet strength. His legacy will live on in the students he taught, the family he cherished, and the countless people he uplifted simply by being who he was. He will be deeply and greatly missed.
A Message from the Family
We will carry Dad’s kindness, his faith, and his gentle strength with us always. He taught us to look for the good in others, to serve without hesitation, and to love with our whole hearts. His example shaped our lives and continues to guide us. We are forever grateful for the gift of being his family, and we honor him by living as he did; loving people as they are but seeing them as they can become.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday December 16, 2025 at the Davis Creek Ward, 825 South 50 East in Farmington, Utah. Evening viewing on Monday, 7-8:30pm at the same location.
