Deanna Atkins Smith's Obituary
Deanna Atkins Smith passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026, surrounded by family in her home in Springville, Utah. Born on November 27, 1937, in Crossett, Arkansas, she was the second of four children of Ernest and Bernice (McNeely) Atkins. Deanna’s early years were shaped by her mother’s loving care, who sewed every outfit she wore and ensured she always looked as though she had "stepped out of a bandbox."
A proud graduate of Crossett High School’s Class of 1955, Deanna excelled both academically and socially. She served as a cheerleader and was captain during her senior year. Her beauty and grace earned her the titles of Miss Crossett in 1953 and Homecoming Queen in her final year of high school. After graduation, Deanna attended the University of Arkansas on a Georgia-Pacific scholarship. She later worked as secretary to the Vice President of Georgia-Pacific, showcasing her dedication and professionalism.
In 1962, Deanna met William “Will” J. Smith of Fordyce, Arkansas—the love of her life. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, music, and the aroma of home-cooked meals, where they raised six wonderful children. Their warmth and Southern hospitality drew others in and made their home a place of refuge for so many.
Passion for music was a defining aspect of Deanna's life; she taught piano and voice lessons for many years, inspiring a deep appreciation for music among her students and family members. She encouraged each of her children to develop their own talents and use them to bless the lives of others
Deanna’s faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. Alongside her sweetheart, Will, she served faithfully in numerous callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was especially known for her beautiful singing voice and her ad-lib hymn arrangements, bringing a spirit of peace and reverence to worship services. Later in life, they served a mission as Employment Specialists at the LDS Employment Resource Center in Springville and as temple workers at the LDS Provo City Center Temple. Deanna also devoted countless hours to researching her family history—a pursuit she considered one of her greatest purposes in life—blessing many through her efforts.
She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and longed to be surrounded by them. They were always eager to visit "Grandma De" and "Grandpa Will," and considered her just as much a bright spot in their day as she considered them! They cherish the times of cooking together in her kitchen while listening to favorite tunes, which often prompted "Grandma De" to break out into dance moves and impressive fifties style footwork!
Deanna was preceded in death by two siblings and her youngest son, Justin Matthew. She is survived by her husband Will; five children: Cyndi Tinnell, Susan (Von) Alleman, Shauna Toogood, Julianna Hartness, and Scott (Jena); her brother Tim (Leisha) Atkins; 19 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel located at 355 E Center St, Springville, UT 84663. A viewing will take place prior to the service at 9:30 a.m., followed by interment at the Historic Springville City Cemetery.
Deanna’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched with her love for family, music, faith, and service. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
