DeAnne Metcalf Patterson Hill's Obituary
DeAnne Metcalf Patterson Hill was born to Lawrence Don Metcalf and Aleen May Cook on December 28, 1957 in Huntsville, Alabama. DeAnne shares a birthday with her father, who was completing his 2 year required military service when DeAnne and her little brother Wes were born.
Growing up in Vernal, DeAnne remembers seeing the Milky Way. Her favorite cartoon was Road Runner and Coyote. DeAnne enjoyed camping and boating with her family and extended family.
DeAnne made life long friendships in the Edgemont 2nd ward in Provo. Ripples Drive Inn was a favorite high school hangout. She also worked at the local pizza place and graduated from Provo High School in 1976.
DeAnne began skydiving at Cedar Valley airport. While jumping out of perfectly good airplanes from 10,000+ feet, she met Larry Patterson. Their discussions on religion got her to research the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and gain a testimony of Jesus Christ - a testimony she maintained her entire life.
Larry and DeAnne were married on Feb 2, 1978. They had amazing adventures together. He taught her how to fly a plane. They skydived at meets around the world and lived in the artic regions of Alaska.
Kimberly and Jodi were born to their family. DeAnne became the neighborhood and county Tupperware lady. She led her team to top sales in the state for years.
Larry and DeAnne divorced in 1989. To make things easier on their girls, DeAnne bought a house just two blocks away - giving the girls the opportunity to see both parents as much as they wanted.
DeAnne married Tom Hill on Dec 1, 1990. (Divorced in 2003.) She gained three step kids - Mandi, Jeremy and Ben. Baby Jacob and Baby Jessica joined the family too.
With a new husband, new baby, and several preteens, DeAnne went back to college and became a nurse. She emphasized the importance of higher education to all of her children. Because of her influence, all four of her biological children have at least 4 year degrees.
DeAnne worked as a nurse in oncology, home health and hospice, as a scrub tech in the operating room, same day surgery and recovery, and at the Uni psych ward. She loved working the teen unit at the psych ward because she loved helping the kids learn that they can have a better life, a different life, a happier life.
DeAnne retired from nursing in 2014 to join Kim as a realtor and property manager. They worked together until the end of Deanne’s life.
The kidney cancer first appeared at the end of 2015. She had the cancer, a kidney and a ureter removed, and was healthy for several years.
DeAnne loves her grandchildren. She was always there to babysit and to be a listening ear when the grandkids needed her. She was the fun grandma - playing with the kids, making jewelry, and getting in the water on vacation. Each of her children and grandchildren knew she would drop everything to come help when they needed her - because she always did. She took care of everyone around her.
Deanne loved to travel. She enjoyed the safari in Africa, Jessica’s wedding in India, Niagara Falls, Baja Mexico, NASA in Florida, and so many smaller trips around the United States. She was a calming influence wherever she went - unless the discussion became political.
DeAnne loved to learn. She loved history, reading and listening to audible. She delved into the scriptures, other religions and their texts, politics, famous historical figures, eastern history and so many other subjects.
She loved to crochet (even though she had pain from arthritis) and made blankets, pillows, slippers, hats, gloves and cardigans for those she loves.
She loved animals, especially dogs and birds. Her children and grandchildren loved it when grandma had puppies at her home! They also played with Grandma’s parrots and pet rats. But no one played with DeAnne’s tarantula.
At the end of 2021, the kidney cancer returned, but this time in the bones. She fought the cancer for three years including a surgery that removed her entire femur and replaced it with a titanium one. She had to learn to walk again and used a crutch for the rest of her life. But she was determined to spend as much time with family as possible.
DeAnne graduated from this life on Nov 1, 2024 surrounded by her children. Her message to her kids and family is that we all did the best we can with what we have. Her advice to all is to be kind to yourself.
DeAnne is survived by her mother, Aleen Metcalf; her brother Wes Metcalf; her children Kimberly (Andrew) Finch, Jodi (Brandon) Jones, Jacob (Kylie) Hill, Jessica (Vivek) Singh; 12 grandchildren Natalie Patterson, Luke Patterson, Owen Finch, Nicole Patterson, Spencer Jones, Gloria Finch, Mikayla Jones, Paul Asimwe, Leo Finch, Brooklyn Jones, Caden Jones and Arthur Hill; and 4 grand dogs. She is proceeded in death by her father Larry Metcalf.
Memorial services will be Saturday November 16, 2024 at 10 am at 496 South River Way Lehi, Utah. An open house to mingle and commemorate will follow from 11 am to noon.
