Delbert Ernest Wallengren's Obituary
Our dear husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Del had been residing at the Salt Lake Veteran's Care Center and was in the presence of his eternal companion, Myrna, at the time of his passing.
Del was born March 24, 1927 in Billings, Montana to Martha Hedin and Ernest Wallengren, the oldest of two children. His father was so proud of their newborn son that he bought the strongest cigars he could find to celebrate. Celebration and love of children are attributes that Del carried forward throughout his long life.
Del graduated from the University of Colorado with degrees in psychology and math. He was a true polymath, with interests in almost every field from medicine to history to science. His personality - the Navy during WWII, one of the original owners of the Homestead Resort, as well as many other restaurant ventures, co-founder of the Heber Creeper and a high school teacher and coach. Later in life he managed Elysian Burial Gardens.
Del enjoyed sports and played many including football, basketball, softball, and wrestling. He loved classical music and loved to play and listen to jazz. But his greatest love was his family.
Del married his sweetheart, Mynra Lois Tame, in 1973. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple after he was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Christmas Eve 1976. Del and Myrna welcomed their son, Brandon, into their blended family that included Myrna's Two daughters by a first marriage, Tami and Tori, and Del's five children from his first marriage- Ernest, Kristin, Mark, Eric and Rolf. Del Successfully knit everyone together in a spirit of love and unity. He will be remembered for his wisdom, generosity and charity but mostly for his laugh and sense of humor.
Del is survived by twenty-two grandchildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren. Predeceased by parents, Elaine Moseley (sister) and Ernest Wallengren (son).
Funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 3rd at the Valley View 3rd Ward Chapel, 4101 South 1925 East, Holladay, Utah. Interment at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South, following the funeral.
Family and friend are invited to a viewing from 6-8 PM on Thursday, February 2nd at the Valley View 3rd Ward the morning of the funeral from 9:30-10:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of Del's legacy, our family suggests doing some good for a loved one or a stranger.
