Derek Earl Spackman's Obituary
Derek Earl Spackman, 45 of Orem Utah, passed away on Tuesday July 28, 2020. He was born on December 16, 1974 in San Jose California to David Earl Spackman and Annette Spackman.
Derek was an accomplished athlete. He excelled at all sports and was a high school letterman in baseball, basketball and football at Leland High School in San Jose California. As a youth, Derek loved playing soccer and was a member of an elite club team which won various state and national tournaments. Derek loved to stay in shape. He spent time at the gym lifting weights almost every day, even after a serious car accident which left his right arm permanently injured, which left him in severe pain throughout his life. Derek knew all things sports. Able to spot a great athlete and team before others, he was particularly gifted at predicting a star player or winning team before the fact. He always won at March Madness. Derek will also be remembered for his wonderful but shameless sense of humor. When Derek laughed, we all laughed. Derek's greatest love was his family, especially his many nieces and nephews. He was always concerned about their welfare.
Derek was born into a long line of Utah Pioneers and loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He served an LDS mission to the Leeds England Mission from 1992-1994 and as a missionary, found inordinate success. Upon returning from his mission, Derek attended University of Utah and earned a Bachelors Degree in Political Science.
Derek is survived by his mother Annette Spackman, his sisters Jamie Spackman Preston and Dayna Schoonover, and his brother Brandon Spackman. He was preceded in death by his brother Michael Spackman and his father David Earl Spackman. Derek was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
A graveside service will be held at Orem City Cemetery on Thursday August 6 at 10:30am.
