Diane Challis North's Obituary
In Loving Memory
Diane North was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, on July 12, 1931, to Thomas Harold Challis and Stella Irene Rodgers. A longtime Jackson, Wyoming, resident, she recently moved to Holladay, Utah, for health reasons, where she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, October 22, 2017, following complications from a stroke. She was 86.
Diane met her neighbor from around the corner, Larry, in front of her house in Baden, Pennsylvania, in 1949 while planting flowers. Two years later, on July 20, 1951, she married Larry, her one true love. They were married for 66 years until she passed.
She graduated as class valedictorian from Leetsdale High School. She then started college at Geneva College in Rochester, Pennsylvania, and continued her studies at Eastern Kentucky University alongside Larry until the first of their four children was born.
Diane lived and traveled the world over, residing on three continents, five countries, and in six states. Nonetheless, her love of the mountains always drew her back to Jackson where she lived and continued to care for her family for over 30 years.
Diane loved classical music, gardening, entertaining, and cooking for her family. She was best known for her resilience, tolerance, and optimism. Diane was also an accomplished artist and painter and a proud alto singer in her church choir, most recently with the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole. She enjoyed skiing and tennis as well, was an avid golfer and followed politics closely.
Diane was preceded in death by her son, Michael, in 1991, and her sister, Norma, in 2008.
She is survived by her husband, Larry, her brother Tom, and her three children, Larry, Cindy, and Stacy (and her husband, Michael). She is also survived by six grandchildren, Katie (and her husband, Shayne), Shauna, Halina, Lucas, Tobin, and Dillon, and her three great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Emma, and Bode. Together, they all agree that she was the kindest, most loving, and generous wife, sister, mother, and grandmother in the world.
