Diane Black Winegar's Obituary
Our beautiful, sweet, loving Wife, Mother and Daughter, Diane Black Winegar left this world for her Eternal Home on Sunday afternoon, surrounded by her loving, grateful family. Where there is unbearable grief here on Earth at her passing, there is exquisite and unimaginable joy and rejoicing in Heaven, where she was welcomed and embraced by her Savior, Jesus Christ, her loving parents, sister and so many of her family who’d gone before.
Diane was born to Angus Clinton Black and Violet Ruth Newton in 1956, the youngest of 4 rambunctious children, raised in Midvale and Sandy, Utah. She dearly loved and admired her big Brother, Clinton and adored her beautiful sisters Annette and Linda. They were a marvelous, happy family. The family spent all their time together on their boat, on the beach, water skiing, swimming, and loving one another. Bear Lake was their secret haven. Diane was an expert swimmer and slalom water Skier and loved the water her entire life.
Diane attended Union Middle school and later Brighton High School. She was always beautiful, happy, energetic and athletic. Her happiness and zest for life brought her dozens of friends and admirers, all of whom were blessed and uplifted by her carefree, loving spirit and demeanor. She loved to dance and majored in it at the University of Utah.
She loved nature and the outdoors and spent a wonderful summer working in the Tetons at Jackson Lake Lodge. At the age of 21, her love for her Savior spurred the desire within her to serve, and she was off to Boston, Vermont and other beloved and sacred destinations where she served valiantly for 18 months, loving every second of her time in the mission field.
Diane married Mitch Winegar (who followed her around like a puppy from the day they met in High School) shortly after returning from her mission. They attended the University of Utah, living in the student family housing, where their first daughter was born. This little daughter was only the first of 10 beautiful, wonderful children Diane brought into the world and loved with all her heart. Raising her ever-growing family led to moves to Taylorsville, West Jordan, South Jordan and finally to Herriman. Along the way, Diane gained many life-long and eternal friendships. Her immense love was not limited to her own children, but spilled over to hundreds more in everything she did in life and in her church callings along the way. She served as a nursery leader to near 30 little ones, then as Primary President to over a hundred more. She served as Primary President several times, in the Young Women organization, in Ward and Stake Primary Presidencies and Young Women Presidencies as well, all while loving and nurturing her own 10 children.
In Herriman she enjoyed two of her most rewarding and spiritual callings, teaching the 7-8 year old primary class with her husband and later serving in the Singles Ward with him as well. When she wasn’t working with the youth, she served several times as a Ward Missionary. Teaching and testifying of Jesus Christ, whether to 7-year-old children or 70-year-old neighbors, came naturally to Diane because she knew him so well. She loved her Savior with all her heart and walked with him daily. Diane was always athletic and kept herself in very good physical condition. She was an expert water skier and swimmer and loved to walk, run, took aerobics, step and yoga classes and taught many classes herself. People were always shocked and amazed when they discovered she’d delivered 10 children! Despite her healthy habits and attitude, she was blind-sided with advanced Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2014. Although a dire prognosis, Diane shed only a few tears and began her battle against it, undergoing several surgeries, radiation, chemo-therapy, more surgery and constant physical struggles. Most would not have survived such a difficult and rigorous battle but, within 3 years, Diane was not only cancer free, but running, swimming and exercising again, like nothing had ever happened and she continued life, loving, serving and enjoying every minute of her time on Earth.
In the summer of 2022, Diane started getting tired and having aches and pains after working in her yard. Typically, she’d simply work through such, but the symptoms worsened. In the fall, she was diagnosed with a severe infection and the antibiotics weren’t working. The traditional family Christmas had to be postponed. In early January, she had to have emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer. The surgery saved her life (and she was thrilled with the helicopter ride to University Hospital), but she and her family were devastated to learn the cancer was back, more aggressive and far less treatable than before.
Again, Diane shed a few tears and went to battle with the cancer. This last year has been one of sacrifice, blessings and miracles amidst Chemo, surgeries, pain and suffering. Diane blessed the lives of all those around her and they, in turn, blessed her life and the lives of her family. Ministering angels, both of Heaven and of Earth surrounded her daily. Last Sunday, surrounded by her children, she passed peacefully into eternity while being held in her husband’s loving arms. Diane was preceded in death by her mother, Violet Ruth Newton Black, her father, Angus Clinton Black, and her sister, Linda Ann Black. She is survived by her brother - Clinton Black and wife June Black, sister - Annette Honda and husband Bob Honda, her husband Mitch Winegar, daughter - Kristi Warren and husband Spenser with daughter Katherine, son - Bret Winegar and wife Jenn with children Hanna, Will, Lucy, Clara and Griffin, son - Danny Winegar and wife Traci with children Ashlyn, Kirsten, Jackson and Caden, daughter - April Eldridge with Husband Weston, son – Jeffrey and wife Katie with children Emma, Daniel, Abby and Noah, son – Erik and Sydney, with child Mack, son-Seth and Emily with children Alice, Millie and Wade (+new arrival soon), daughter Ali Worth with Husband Aiden, son – Josh and Wife Erika with daughter Charlotte, and youngest daughter Emily. (Whew!)
