Diego was my best friend in elementary school at Marlon Hills until I moved away in the fifth grade. We kept in touch for a short while afterwards but eventually lost touch. As Jim mentioned previously, you will never have friends like those from your youth. I have always wondered what and how “D” was doing and am saddened to learn of his passing.
During our friendship we considered ourselves the kings of Classic Skating in Riverdale. Every Friday night was skate night and we rarely missed a night. It was disco and we dressed to fit the part, bellbottom pants, wide collared shirts, feathered hair, turquoise necklaces, and Avon cologne. Great memories from a simpler time in life that we tend to lose touch with as we progress though life, myself included.
Chris, Oma, and Renee continually made me feel welcome in their home and I have a distinct memory of Oma fixing us dinner and my always being captivated by the replica models of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria displayed in their living room. Likewise, when Diego was at my home, he was considered family.
I extend my condolences to his family and friends and you remain in my thoughts. I take solace in knowing his legacy will continue through his children and grandchildren. I am grateful for the time I knew him and will treasure those memories. “D” will lastingly be reflected on as my lifelong friend.
