Dorothy Howarth Carr of Saint George, UT, beloved mother to 5 children and loving wife to the late Dr. Bruce A. Carr, peacefully passed away from terminal cancer on August 10, 2025, at the age 87.
Dorothy was born in Brigham City, UT on February 13, 1938, to John Carr Howarth and Anne Wendel Howarth and grew up in Portland, OR. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1956 before attending Brigham Young University on scholarship where she earned her bachelor’s degree in medical technology in 1960.
Dorothy married Bruce Alvin Carr in the Los Angeles temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on June 11, 1960. They lived in Los Angeles, CA; Novato, CA; and Woodland, CA before settling in Santa Maria, CA in 1971 where for 30 years she raised 5 incredible children while Bruce practiced Optometry.
Dorothy took special joy in service to others, especially through various callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including Stake Relief Society President. Her life of service also blessed many in the community through the PTA, scouting, and countless other ways.
Dorothy also loved music. She was a very talented piano player and sang in many choirs over the years, including a traveling choir that toured Poland in the mid-1980s.
Following Bruce’s retirement from Optometry, Dorothy and Bruce served as a senior missionary couple for 18 months in the Port Harcourt, Nigeria mission from 2000-2001 where they developed a deep love for the Nigerian people. Following their mission to Nigeria, they moved to Saint George, UT where they lived for over 20 years, making many more great friends along the way.
