Doug and I were a little less than three years apart. I hated to read; good at arithmetic but bad on reading. Doug turned me on to reading, showing me some of the books we had right there at home on our family bookshelf. First the Hardy Boys mysteries for kids. Loved them! Then he showed me the Greek mythology stories, the classics, which we had also in volumes made readable for kids. Awesome! Hercules, Zeus, Athena, et al. More awesomeness! Due to Doug I learned how to enjoy books, opening a whole new world.
Also, Doug could listen to a song on the radio when in 1st or 2nd grade and later sing most of the song. Our dad told me this that Doug would ride in the car, hear a song dad was playing on the radio and then sing it back the next day. Dad was really impressed and proud of Doug. I told Doug many years later; he was happy to hear dad had said that. (Lesson for me - don’t wait years to pass on things very positive).
