Elizabeth "Bette" Schulz's Obituary
Elizabeth “Bette” Schulz peacefully passed away in September 2021 from natural causes in Salt Lake City, Utah. Bette was born in Dover, New Jersey in June 1937 to Harlan and Mary Winch. Bette graduated from Dover High School in 1955 where she excelled in every subject, especially music. Bette was involved with music from a very young age. She was a natural talent with her beautiful soprano voice and was extraordinary on the piano. She studied voice and piano in New York City during her teenage years. In 1957, Bette married Richard Edwards Muhlbach (deceased 1989) and lived in many states on the East Coast. Bette and Richard had three children: Lori England (Gordon), Penny Edwards, and Kyle Edwards (Jill). Bette and Richard settled in Barstow, California in 1968. While in California, Bette performed as the soprano soloist in “the Messiah” yearly Christmas programs in the Los Angeles and San Bernadino, California areas. The family lived in Barstow until Richard retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, and the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1979.
Starting in 1980, Bette served for 12 years in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and enjoyed touring all over the world performing. Bette worked in the banking industry from age 18 and retired from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2002 after 20 years of service.
In 1985, Bette married Roland Clements (now deceased) and later divorced. Bette then married Gary Schulz and moved to Windham, Maine. Gary passed in 2015 and Bette returned to Utah to be closer to her children. Bette is survived by her children, two grandchildren: Amber England-Meadows (Sheena), and John England; two brothers: Bill Winch (John DeHaas) of Rochester, New York, and Harlan Winch (Liz, now deceased) of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, as well as nieces and nephews.
Bette lived a wonderful life and enjoyed it all! She loved animals and for years wrote letters to her “granddogs” which in turn, they wrote letters back to her. While in Maine, Bette and Gary entertained residents at many assisted living and independent living facilities sharing their musical talents. She also loved gardening and passed her musical talents and love of gardening to her children and grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held at Premier Funeral Services, 67 East 8000 South, Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 13, 2021, at 12:00 p.m.
The family extends many thanks to Mom’s caregivers at Harmony Home Health & Hospice and Cottonwood Creek Assisted Living. Mom, you will be greatly missed. We love you.
