Ellen Verna Morrell Berube's Obituary
Ellen Verna Morrell Berube
1934 – 2022
Ellen Verna Morrell Berube, 87, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2022 in her home in Highland, Utah.
Born in Portland, Maine to Donald and Avis Morrell, she was the fourth of five children. Her family moved North to Caribou, Maine where in 1937 her mother died from complications of pneumonia. The next year, Ellen’s younger brother Louis also died at the age of ten months. Raised by her father, Ellen learned the value of hard work earning her the responsibility of carrying water from a neighboring well to their home without plumbing, chopping and stacking wood to heat their home during the frigid winters of Northern Maine, and caring for their large garden to help feed the family.
Ellen began her education in a one-room schoolhouse near her home. She graduated from Caribou High School in 1951 and then worked as a telephone operator in Presque Isle, Maine. In January 1954, she married Travis Moseley, who was stationed at Loring Air Force Base. They had four daughters and were living in Little Rock, Arkansas when they divorced in the summer of 1964. In November, Ellen joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 1967 when the Cal-Dak factory where Ellen worked shut down, she decided to go home to Maine. Ellen and her girls lived with her father Donald for nine months. Soon after moving into an apartment in Caribou, her oldest daughter began babysitting for Robert “Bob” Berube. He was an accountant for the Civil Service, was divorced, and had custody of his three young sons.
They were married in 1969 forming a large family of 7 children. After several years of living in Maine, Arizona, and then Massachussettes, Bob and Ellen settled in Bennion, Utah with the boys who were the only children still living at home. Ellen had a passion for making ceramic pieces and started a business there where she taught others that art.
Once their children were grown and married, Ellen and Bob moved to Phillip’s Ranch, California where two granddaughters lived with them for several years. Ellen never hesitated to share her time and wisdom with them as they felt more like daughters to her. After 18 years in California, they moved back to Utah and settled in Highland, where they have lived the past 15 years. In her final years, with limited mobility, Ellen loved to watch western movies and do biblical word search puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Erma, grandson, Austin, and granddaughter, Jennifer. She is survived by her brother, Burnham, her husband, Bob, and their 7 children, 37 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, October 15, 2022 at the Canyon View Ward building, 10494 North 4720 West, Highland, Utah where a viewing will be prior to services from 9:00 to 9:45 am. Interment at the Highland City Cemetery, 6200 West 11000 North, Highland, Utah following services at the church.
