I've had several fond memories of my Grandfather. Two that stick out the most, are a camping trip that started out as a 5 day, 50 mile hike in the Sierra Nevada mountains, ended as a 1 night 14 Mike hike after a black bear and her cubs raided our camp on the first night, depriving us of almost all of our food. We had enough for a small breakfast. We ended up hiking back out the 7 miles we had hiked in the previous day and went home. The second memory was a trip he and I took several years later together to California for my cousin Brents' funeral. Grandpa had just finished restoring his truck, a 1992 Dakota that incidently he bought from me. It had a new engine and he was eager to break it in. During the first leg of the trip across the salt flats of Utah, we encountered a snow storm and our wipers quit. I urged him to turn back so we could grab my vehicle for the trip instead. Grandpa being the stubborn soul that he is, declined and insisted on continuing. We made the entire trip through snow and rain without wipers. How we did, I don't know, but I'll never forget that trip.

A Love for Reading and Learning
Thank you for your influence to inspire a love for reading, studying, and learning. Being fully literate is the key to life-long learning and achieving goals in education and life. Your large collection of good books has always been an inspiration to us. When we had a question, you encouraged us to “look it up”. That self-reliant attitude to do our due diligence in research not only resolved the immediate questions, but gave us the tools to resolve all future questions. We saw that continuing education must necessarily be an integral part of our lives both as youngsters, and as adults. That value is huge to me now in my career as a network engineer in a large urban school district where development, change, and problem solving are constant daily challenges.

An Unwavering Testimony of The Gospel and A Lifetime of Faithful Service
Thank you for showing us in word and deed your love of the scriptures and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You've lived a consistent example of activity, participation, covenant making and keeping. Your humble prayers have taught us the way to approach our Heavenly Father each day. Your example of searching the scriptures have inspired our own desires to read, ponder, and pray about the Gospel truths contained in their pages. Your years of teaching the Gospel and expounding at home have left each of us with the burning witness of the truth of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. You've led us on the straight and narrow path with your arms firmly holding the iron rod. We have seen and learned from your example. Our lives are all eternally blessed by your living example.

Family History and Temple Work
Thank you for researching your family history, keeping family photos, and serving in the temple. Your stories of doing research in the LA Library years ago set the example for me to value the genealogical data you had collected. I still remember the time we spent an afternoon copying family group sheets by hand from your late Aunt Marjorie Jensen. That was my first lesson in keeping family history. By your diligence in regularly attending to Temple worship, you have taught us to look to the Temple to make and keep eternal covenants with our Heavenly Father. Finally, Thank you for seeing that our family is sealed for eternity in the House of the Lord. By so doing, we have no fear for mother who is now departed from us. Nor have we any fear for our own eventual journey beyond the veil of death.

A Keen Eye for Artful Architecture
Thank you for inspiring an appreciation for the beauty and symmetry of well-designed architecture. I remember seeing you draft home plans for custom homes for customers seeking to create a comfortable dwelling. Your designs incorporated practical planning, solid construction, and visually appealing elevations that enhanced the neighborhoods in which they were built. Just yesterday, while looking for a home in which Joan's niece and her family have moved into in Orem, we drove past a home on 950 west I remember working on in the mid-seventies. I pointed it out to Joan. It needs some touch up and renovation, but the shake roof (I remember having to load bundle by bundle up a ladder onto the roof), is still in place. It is a unique-looking home, and I am proud to point it out and say, 'There's one I helped my daddy build!”

Utility and Creativity
Thank you for showing us how to make things for our families that we need and want in a creative and economically affordable way. You showed us how to use your knowledge of building to satisfy needs in renovating our home, adding a door to the back yard, building a fence, creating a shuffleboard court, digging down a three-foot deep pit to keep the trampoline at a level that is lower to the ground while being mounted on brick pillars. You beautified our home by remodeling the roof line and replacing the shingles, by breaking out the asphalt driveway to replace it with concrete.
When you needed a camper shell on your Datsun pickup, you built it from plywood. When you needed a tool box for the Dodge truck, you custom built it to hold your tools. In so many ways you leveraged your ingenuity to solve problems and create fixtures, do repairs, build cabinets and kitchen tables, both for your business and for our family's needs. Your example has taught us to employ more of our own resources and abilities to solve problems like you have done for us.

A Personal Gift to Design and Build My Own Home
Thank you for teaching me principles and techniques I could employ to eventually build my own home which Joan and I have lived in the past 34 years. While laboring beside you as a youth in a home building project, you gave me an “ah hah” moment when you stated that the on-the-job training you were giving me would be of value later on when I needed to build my own home. That prediction was fulfilled only 12 or so years later. Then you added to that gift the priceless value of drawing the plans so my contractor could proceed with the construction. Then you added to that gift again by designing, building, and delivering the cabinetry needed for the home. You later added to that gift by spending a week with me sheet rocking, taping, and mudding my basement. All these gifts we benefit from every day.
