Eric Leroy Evenson's Obituary
Eric Leroy Evenson
Our beloved brother and uncle, Eric Leroy Evenson, was born on September 28, 1955, in Washington, D.C. He was the third child and first son of Leroy and Carolee Evenson.
Since he was a toddler, Eric has lived in Utah. He grew up in Monticello and Moab and lived in the Salt Lake Valley since he was a teenager. He loved music, especially classical. His favorite composers were Bach and Vivaldi. Eric played the piano, clarinet, and trumpet. He enjoyed singing and often sang in the ward choir.
Eric was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and always strived to have integrity. He served a Spanish-speaking mission in New York City, and had an aptitude for languages, especially Spanish and Norwegian. One of his favorite jobs was teaching Spanish to new missionaries at the MTC.
Eric was a whiz at math, calculus, and intricate puzzles. He was a problem solver, and had an outstanding memory! He was the original “Wiki” and “Google”. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electronics at Brigham Young University in 1984 and earned a master’s degree in computer science at Loyola College in Maryland in 1986. He was hired by Westinghouse in Maryland as an electronic technician, working on AWAC military computer systems for the government. Eric also wrote computer software at Waterford in Salt Lake City. He adored working on electronics and computers and had many jobs repairing electronics. He also had a love for science at an early age and working on experiments. He ‘fixed’ the family clock and record player to run backwards. He had an affinity for children and loved to play games or chat with them when the family got together.
As a youth, Eric had a paper route and really enjoyed riding his bike. Later when he worked at the LDS owned Granite Vault record storage, he rode his bike up and down Little Cottonwood Canyon every day. He was also active in the Boy Scouts.
Eric was a cheerful, loving person with a bright smile, and always showed interest in other people. He had a witty personality and enjoyed telling jokes and teaching. He loved children, was a devoted and fun uncle, and loved teasing his siblings.
Eric spent many years taking care of his aging parents, especially when Dad was on hospice. He was always kind, thoughtful, and full of integrity. Eric is preceded in death by his parents and nephew Ashton. He is survived by his nine siblings: Eileen, Jeannine (Bruce), Marianne (Donald), Kathryn (Ted), Janet, Richard (Danielle), Karen (Brad), Lisa (Jim), and Jonathan (Julie). He has 35 nieces and nephews and 100 great nieces and nephews, with two more coming in May.
