Fern Sevy's Obituary
Fern Slade Sevy, passed from this life, peacefully on Christmas Eve, 2022.
She is survived by her five children – Douglas (Valerie), Julene (Les, deceased), Bruce (JoAnn), Michael (Mary), and Eric (Brooke) – nineteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death is Arthur, her loving husband, her three brothers – Jim, Royden, and Deloy, her half-brother – Leon, and two grandsons – Justus and William.
Fern was born on February 8, 1927 in Panguitch, Utah to James Ray Slade and Brenda Worthen.
On January 22, 1944, she married her sweetheart, Arthur C. Sevy for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple. They loved, on this earth, for fifty-eight years.
Fern was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and she had a testimony of the gospel from a young age. One of her greatest desires was for her family to have the blessings of the gospel. Fern held multiple church callings, including Young Women’s President, Relief Society President, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, and temple ordinance worker for over 22 years. At fourteen, she was called to be chorister; on her 95th birthday she said, "I am now retiring from leading the music."
Fern loved and appreciated music. The ‘Sevy Family’ children won musical competitions, due to her coaching and attention to songs that her children enjoyed and were within their singing capabilities. (Not to mention adding some clever choreography.)
Musical parties at the Sevy home were a spectacle with highly accomplished musicians and singers. While not a soloist, she used her alto voice to harmonize beautifully, with her loving husband. Fern’s Christmas musical party was always held on the first Saturday of December – important to her for getting friends in the holiday spirit.
Fern loved to entertain. Her dinner parties were legendary. If you were invited to Fern’s for dinner, you needed more than an appetite. If it was a ‘welcome new families’, be prepared to tell a story. If a ‘progressive’ dinner, expect a theme, and a talk on the course you were hosting.
Fern was an accomplished seamstress, who not only made her clothes from Vogue and Paris original patterns but also created and designed her own fashions, and organized and modeled in a number of fashion shows. Additionally, she used her sewing skills to ‘clothe’ her home by sewing drapes and reupholstering furniture.
She was a baker and cook. The sweet and savory smells still linger in our minds: home-made bread, Swedish tea-rings, the days she was canning fruit, and her husband’s favorite pot roast.
Fern was a planner. Monthly family ‘outings’ were the norm. Whether traveling to a museum, the zoo, a historical site, or even a theme park, these excursions were orchestrated to maximize the needs and interests (and attention spans) of her young and growing children.
Fern, or Grandma, always had special, one-on-one time with her grandchildren. It might have been a trip to the local library, going to an afternoon play, the zoo, making wontons, or just baking cookies.
She will be remembered for more things than can be listed here. More than anything else, she will be missed.
