Gary Bert Weight's Obituary
It's with broken hearts we announce that Gary Bert Weight, 86, of Taylorsville, Utah, passed away Sunday April 28th, 2024. While holding his sweethearts hand of 62 years, he bravely took his last breath.
He was born on October 2nd, 1937 in Provo, Utah. He was the first of 5 children born to Bert Howard Weight and Ethel (Fletcher) Weight.
Around age 7 their family moved to Tooele, Utah. Where his loving childhood was filled with family, church, school, fishing trips, boy scouts, sports and a little mischief here and there.
He proudly graduated from Tooele High School in 1955 and continued to be actively involved with his high school reunions. He was an all-star athlete with long standing records in track and many accolades in basketball.
When dad was 19 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While enlisted, became a helicopter Crew Chief, played basketball and ran track. Dad served his country honorably and was a proud supporter of all our Veterans.
Dad met the love of his life, Sandra Elaine Gentner in 1962. They first met at a church dance and mom knew immediately he was the man she would marry. Mom and dad were great dancers and would still dance when they could. They were married June 15th, 1962. Dad fulfilled a promise to mom and himself and later their marriage solemnized in the Jordan River Temple in 2000.
Dad was an extremely hard worker and started working at age 14. Tri State Lumber yard, Bestway, Farm and Home delivery, Jewel T driver, Coal smelter but the job that changed his destiny was sales for the trucking industry. Mom encouraged dad to wear a suit to his interview that day and dad got the job. In dad's retirement years he loved working at the hotel as the shuttle driver and all-around helper. He and mom had their antiques shop and loved attending estate auctions and restoring furniture. He loved selling classic knives at the local gun shows.
Dad was an avid golfer. We could always count on golf being on in the house or dad being on the golf course. He even got a hole in one.
He always cherished fishing with his wife, dad, brothers, uncles, children, grandchildren and many others. With his three day whiskers, waders and old green army jacket full of dirt and worms, he'd say, "best fishing is when it's cold". Dad said "fishing with his uncles was like Star Trek, to go where no man had gone before"! Many a morning we'd trapse through the fields and cliffs of Montana and Idaho, to be the first ones on the river. Ice on the tips of our poles and noses. But when we'd get the "big one" he couldn't have been more proud.
Dad loved his BYU Cougars! But enjoyed all good competitive sports.
He was proud of all of his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren! He tried to attend all of our activities and was always gathering golf clubs and fishing poles for his family. Dad passed down the traditions of fishing, golfing, hunting and sports to all of us.
One thing that dad was most proud of was his church service. Dad tried to never miss his home teaching or an opportunity to give service to anyone in his ward. He served in his ward library in an extremely prompt and organized fashion. He helped anyone he could. He emulated his dad and said "I could never fill his shoes".
A big hole is left in our lives and our hearts. It will be hard to fill that hole. His family, country and the Savior were the most important things to him. Dad, your hi-sign wave, laughter, twinkling eyes, funny dad-isms, reassuring nods, the tender tears that would well up in your eyes you didn't think we noticed, will all be missed. For now, enjoy those heavenly 18 holes and fishing the rivers in the sky. We know we'll see you again and we take comfort in that. Mom says, "keep looking for our lost wedding rings on the river". Mom has her pole, clubs and green jacket too and will you meet when the time is right.
Thank you to our hospice nurse Chantelle. The loving care you gave dad all this time! Monica, for being there with us through dad's last week. Thank you both.
